Yes, the Buzzfeed article on this is hilarious. They're still completing properties with the opening ceremonies starting tomorrow. Crazy!

I haven't been following the Twitter account, but I think I need to start. It's hilarious, ridiculous, and sad, all at the same time. Yet I can't stop watching!

What's even crazier is that they've outspent other cities and countries getting ready for the games!?! I'm really curious to see what happens to the properties in a year from now. Something tells me that they'll end up on Urbex websites exploring buildings in ruins instead of what the government is saying that they'll be resort hotels after the games.

I was reading this last night and laughing out loud. Especially at the "dangerous face water" woman - http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2014/02/04/journalists-at-sochi-are-live-tweeting-their-hilarious-and-gross-hotel-experiences/.

It's funny that the media is making light of it (since they are hte ones living it) but man it would suck!

@ShootingStar: dying at "on the bright side, I washed my face with evian..." Hahaha
But really, this does seem sad that all this money was spent and it seems like such a temporary thing. Like are they going to ever finish these projects?

I think it's so sad that they've decided at the last minute to kill off the stray dogs. A lot of countries have dogs wandering the streets but to just suddenly decide that that's the solution is just...ugh.

@ShootingStar: OMG. There are no words.
@spaniellove: what?!?! Ugh. I don't like this. It also makes me think that there are a whole lot of other things I don't want to know about their last minute "preparations"...

@spaniellove: when we went to St. Petersburg, there were stray dogs all.over.the.place. It was so sad. Sad to hear that apparently all of Russia is like this

@yoursilverlining: Santorini was like this too. So when I saw dogs running around Peru I assumed they were strays but people laughed and told me they belonged to people.

That twitter handle has been killing me all damn day. I am astonished that this could happen, the IOC really dropped the ball on this one.

I agree that it seems like a big mess and a big waste of money, but I also wonder if, as a country, our biases against them might be contributing to what's being reported and how it's being shared. I wonder what their reporters and athletes say about us when the Olympics are in the US...

@birdofafeather: "like I'm a Kardashian or something." The journalists have already made this mess hilarious. Stuff like this makes me so happy that Twitter exists and for live tweeting Lifetime movies.

@mrs. tictactoe: It's possible, I hadn't really thought about it like that. On the other hand, it's hard to argue with something like 3 of 11 hotels not being finished, a snowboarding course that has been engineered so steeply that people are getting hurt on it, and rampant corruption. There's always stories about controversy and scandal leading up to the Olympics, but this seems a little extreme. If anything, I'm *more* surprised that this is happening, because I would have thought Putin, of all people, would have wanted to put on a show for the world. Go figure.

@LovelyPlum: The dangerous courses are what really upset me-- can you imagine training your whole life for this, then being worried about competing because the course could injure you so badly you don't get another chance? It freaks me out.
However, the reporters posting are pretty funny, especially the Evian/Kardashian comment. Hard to believe how disorganized things are.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@Foodnerd81: seriously. That is something that the IOC really should not permit to happen. It happened in Vancouver, too, and I hated to see it.
But you're so right-the reporters are making the rest of the stuff pretty awesome. I guess when things are so disorganized, you might as well find the humor in it!
