I'm really glad that you have positive news - it seems like your son is a strong little guy! Thank you so much for updating us - and hurray for you being able to go home and shower in your own shower and sleep in your own bed.

Sounds like you have a little fighter! I hope you are doing well. I know personally the first night at home was the roughest, I cried all night. I promise you it gets easier. The best thing to do is get into a routine, pumping, NICU visits, etc.. I hope you have a good night and take care of yourself! You did a great job getting your LO this far. You and your LO are in my thoughts.

Okay...update time. I've been mostly updating on my blog and I started one just for baby and I'm trying to decide how public to make it.
The biggest issue this week has been that baby can't pass his meconium and so his belly is really distended with gas. They have a suction tube down from his throat and tried enemas and suppositories, but on Sat decided they needed to do a fancier enema where they insert contrast guided by X-Ray. This seems to be helping, but the blockage hasn't cleared, so they repeated the procedure today and may have to do it a couple more times.
he also has an open PDA which is the valve that lets blood bypass the lungs in utero. It is supposed to close at birth, but his did not which is common in preemies. He is having some symptoms from this, but it's not an emergency right now. Typically they treat it with a drug, but they can't give it because of his bowel issues. They may have to do surgery to put a clamp on it (they go in from the side, not open heart).
He still hasn't opened his eyes yet (they were fused) but it looks like they'll open anytime which will be exciting.
He's a little over 2 pounds now.
I'm already pumping between 1 and 2 ounces per session which makes the slog of pumping worth it.
I'm exhausted, but otherwise feel fine (well besides the stress and sadness) - physically fine.

@Mrs Green Grass: I know it feels like sooo much right now
PDAs are pretty normal for his age and a common complication, but the meconium issue is a little different.
Do they know if it's a mucus plug vs meconium ileus? I only ask because they have different root causes (which I'm sure your docs have been through with you).
Congrats on pumping so much already. Tenacious mama! I'm wishing you the best and think about you guys every day!

@Mrs Green Grass: you are really inspiring with how positive you are and how well you are handling this. I hope he gets healthy very soon.

You are doing great, pumping that much is awesome, BBGG has one awesome mama. We think and pray for you guys every day.

@Mrs. Jacks: I don't think they know for sure, but they haven't mentioned any root causes to me. The meconium was extremely tacky and tarry. They've talked about continuing this contrast enema and then potentially trying something from the top and they mentioned something that would dehydrate it (which doesn't make sense to me).

MGG, I have been MIA here and WB the past few months (things are kinda busy

Just letting you know I'm still pulling for Baby GG and thinking about you and Mr. GG. I was a bit worried since seen it's been a few days since you've posted a blog update.

@Mrs Green Grass: Glad to hear the update. I hope the contrast thing is working well.
Has he opened his eyes?
Isn't the med to close the PDA just ibuprofen? (The doctor I work with said that's why pregnant moms aren't supposed to take NSAIDs).
I hope he is doing well, and I hope you are also recovering well!

I just saw this thread, and I'm wishing you luck through the coming weeks! I hope baby continues to thrive, and I hope you're getting all of the support you need too, during what must be an incredibly stressful time.
pomelo / 5628 posts
@pastemoo: It's a version of ibuprofen called indocin (sp?) But he can't have it while he has his bowel issue because it can make the bowels worse. It's possible he would have to go straight to surgery, but it's not affecting him too much at the moment.
@skibobrown: Thank you!
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
Is his meconium issue improving? And do they know if it's meconium ileus yet? Just wondering because that could point to a particular underlying issue (such as cystic fibrosis). I still think about you guys every day!

@Mrs Green Grass: finally popped in here. I've been following your story since the WB days. And I just want to say that YOU are an amazing person and a superb mom.
Your little boy sounds like such a fighter and I can already tell you love him like crazy. Whenever I think of you I think "man, I don't know anyone who deserves to be pregnant more than her". Then you did and I was so happy for you. And now this. But you & your husband are obviously very special people and can find the optimism in everything.
Thinking of you and your family daily. Wishing that baby boy keeps progressing nicely and that you get to take him home soon!!!!
pomelo / 5628 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: I think it's just a plug. They had me on Magnesium which reduces the chances of Cystic Fibrosis and I don't think there are any other signs (would there be yet?).
@regberadaisy: Thank you! That is really sweet.
So I got to hold him today!!! I was partially terrified something would go wrong and partially really excited. His heart rate and Ox Sat both dropped for a couple of minutes, but as soon as he was comfortable, he stayed stable the entire time...even when they put him back. It was really nice to have him sleeping on me : )

@Mrs Green Grass: That's a great update and plug is much better than ileus. CF is genetic, though so being on mag shouldn't make a difference. What a beautiful update about holding him. So great!

I'm rooting for you guys, and am always looking out for updates! Congrats on being able to hold him, that is so exciting!
