I will buy LO a puppy once we have our own house and once he is old enough to care for the dog himself. I think it teaches kids a lot about responsibility to grow up caring for an animal

We would love to add another dog to our family when LO is around 5! But..my parents got us a dog when I was 5 and I stopped helping out after a month!

We have one dog currently and will be adding a second when our LO(s) are a little older.

We already have a lab/hound mix and we will probably always have a dog. but i dont think i would ever give a dog or other pet to my child without the knowledge that it is more than likely going to be my pet or the family pet. I always loved animals and had just about every pet at some point or another but i dont think i really grasped the responsibility or work involved until we got our puppy 2 years ago.

Maybe something contained like a fish tank, but not a pet that runs around because thats a lot of work and I'm not crazy about dogs or cats

@autumnlove: When my parents bought a dog for my sister, she had been asking for one for quite awhile. and they talked with her numerous times about all the things she would have to do to take care of it and made sure she understood what it entails. She's had her puppy for about a year and she's 7 1/2. She does an excellent job - but I do think she's a little mature for her age as far as responsibility goes.

I think we will mostly always have a dog. My dog now is almost 10, and he likes being an only dog so I wouldn't add a second dog to the mix. But, I think after he passes (hopefully not for a long time!), we will wait until our kids are old enough to beg for a dog. We would really try and make them be as responsible for it as we can, but also realize that in reality, it will be us taking care of it. We both love dogs and I think they add a lot to a family and would want our kids to be dog lovers as well. I also would never want to deal with a puppy and a baby at the same time though, so I think the youngest would have to be at least a toddler. I will only potty train one at a time!

I was never a dog person... until we got one! And now I can't imagine life without one, so we'll probably always have one, but not specifically "for" my LO. It will be the family dog!

DH plans on getting another dog in about two years (when our current dog, a Newfoundland, is around 6 years old since they don't have a long lifespan, 10 years is doing pretty good for the breed, and he wants to be able to have her help mellow out/train a puppy). We also have a cat and while we most likely will not replace him when he passes.
DD already helps with the cat, at almost 28m DD she is responsible for feeding him every day (started out helping me but now insists on doing it herself and in about 2 months has yet to forget he needs fed). She does such a good job, he is getting a little bit pudgy.

We have a mutt now and I'd imagine we'll always have a dog in the family now. Maybe when the kids are a little older we'll adopt another.

We have our two furbabies now (5, 4). We'll always have dogs, but they will be family pets.

We'll always have pets but I won't count on the kids being responsible for them.

I am thinking about getting a bunny for my son's second b-day. Not that he'd be responsible for it or would be allowed to play with it by himself! But he loves animals and we're not ready to get another dog yet unfortunately.

Like others, we'll have dogs, which will be family pets. If our kids want birds, or fish or iguanas, that's cool, and it can be their pet.

We'll always be a dog family... we have three right now, and I can't imagine life w/out a dog.

We have 2 dogs already and he loves animals. So we will have many pets I believe. He will be responsible for them. At 15 months he already feeds the dogs. So we will definitely keep that up. I am hoping he will be a junior handler for agility one day.

We may do a fish or some other self contained animal. Hubs didn't grow up with pets and isn't especially excited about animals in the house. I grew up with birds and dogs (usually one of each at any given time), and while I would like one, I'm not heartbroken over not having them right now.

We have a dog that she will grow up with for awhile, but when Finley passes away I'm sure we will get another one. No cats for us, not a fan. But fish would be acceptable (and no rodents...hampsters/ginea pigs/ect.)
