We always celebrated st Nicholas day growing up. He would bring out our stockings and fill them with fruit. Now he mails me a tin of my moms Christmas cookies! I love it.
I think it is a German and Dutch tradition. -
When I was in college one of my friends and I got our entire hall to leave their shoes out for St. Nick and we put candy in them. We never told anyone who it was! It was so much fun.
I don't know if he'll visit our kids or not, since I would kinda like to teach them that Santa Claus is St. Nick, and I don't know if they'd just be confused he came twice.

@mediagirl: It's the feast day of St. Nicholas today. In most European countries it's the day St Nick (Santa Claus) would come, instead of actually on Christmas in the US.

I work for a Dutch company so everyone was all excited for Sinterklaas today and Pakjesavond (present night) last night. Sounded like fun!

Yup, St. Nick filled my daughter's stocking last night. I grew up in Wisconsin where the tradition carried forward from Germany strongly. Our daughter will know about St. Nick as it's part of my family history and she'll also know about Santa Claus. They are two different personnas to me.
