Does anyone celebrate St. Nick's Day?
We grew up celebrating this holiday and it's when we received our stockings in our house. I carry the tradition for my LO but my spouse thinks I'm a little nutty.

@MamaG: yes, same as you that's when the stockings came out. We'd come down in the morning to the stockings on the table full of fruit, then after we worked our way through the fruit they got hung up. I'd like to do the same for LO. Now as adults my mom sends us cookies for st nicks day.
I think it is a German and Dutch thing? At least it came from my dad's side (German) and my Dutch bil also did it.

We do! I think it's an Italian thing. Except we do candy in their shoes instead of stockings.

@cmomma17: dec 6. Traditionally I think children left their shoes out overnight and they were filled with candy by st nick!

It's a German tradition (possibly in broader Europe, but that's where my family brings the tradition from). St. Nick was the bearer of gifts to children and he would come on the evening of December 5. Children would leave their shoes outside and in the morning find gifts in their shoes.
St. Nick has sort of morphed into Santa Claus in the states and of course has moved to Christmas.
In my family we didn't do the shoe on the front porch bit, but our stockings were always waiting for us the morning of the 6th on the dining room table. They always had candy, a few stocking stuffers and a huge orange AND apple were laid next to them. We did not get stockings at Christmas.

@MamaG: same- no stockings for Christmas; after st nicks day they were just decoration. I thought people only stuffed stockings in Christmas in the movies until I spent Christmas with my inlaws!

We do! We always put our shoes out! The plus is that it's DH's birthday, so he gets extra gifts

@MamaG: I think it's most of Europe. I'm Russian and St. Nicholas is a huge Saint in the Russian Orthodox Church.

I work for a Dutch company, so that's the only reason I know about it... they call it Sinterklaas.

I grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin which has a huge German/Polish population, so everyone did it and it was all I knew. When I moved to TX, DH had never even heard of it. We don't do it now, we fill stockings on Christmas Eve, but I'll start doing it again when we move back to WI. LO would be left out if I didn't.

My husband and I do! Except the first year we were married I wanted to surprise him with it, and he was like... "There's candy... in my shoes?"

@kiddosc: Whoa! I'm also from Southeastern WI and currently residing in TX. Small world!
I'm excited to see people know what I'm talking about, so many people locally don't have a clue and look at me like I have three heads.

We did it with shoes not stockings! I will definitely carry it on for J.

Yup, I'm so looking forward to putting out LO's tiny shoe! She's getting a Christmas sippy with baby fruit snacks and a cd for our road trip to my folks' at Christmas!

We do! We lay out LO's shoes with their letters to Santa and "St. Nick" fills the shoes with little gifts. I love the tradition! We are three-fourths German so I just thought it derived from Germany but it's cool that a lot of Europeans do it!

My mom is from Holland and grew up with the candy on the shoes thing. We found candy, oranges and cookies in our shoes once. It was so cool, but only happened once.

My mom always did it for us as kids. We put a shoe out (I've actually never heard of stockings being put out) and got a small gift and maybe some candy. I am also from Southeastern WI, but we did it years before we moved to WI. My mom and dad were in the army and stationed in Germany before they had kids (actually I was born there at the end of their service) so I wonder if she first heard about it while over there!
