Hmmm, I may have to give this a try. I have been semi-Paleo a few months and have been looking to kick it up a notch. I was going to do the Virgin Diet for 21 days (eliminates gluten, eggs, dairy, sugar, artificial sweeteners, corn, peanuts, soy) but maybe I should check out the whole30 instead!

This sounds like something I would really enjoy...if only I could get past the no wine for 30 days... I just don't think I can do that! Haha. I am going to think about it though and maybe start after LO's birthday party this weekend.

DH is already moaning about eliminating entire food groups

tell DH that he can take over all the cooking if he's going to be a grumpy mcgrumperson about what is put on the table

So this sounds really exciting, but there are two things holding me back:

    1. I can't stand the sight of an egg, banana, or spinach right now.
    2. Corn tortillas and lentils have been my salvation of late.

So, I may not be in for this round. But, I'm totally interested in recipes!

This is so interesting! Never heard of it! I don't know how i would go with out my oatmeal & peanut butter every morning! hmmmm.... I'll have to talk to DH and see if he's up for the challenge.

@running elley: did you start today? How is it going so far?

  7. plantains

    grapefruit / 4671 posts

@blackbird: I just might! I think I have to get creative and dazzle him with a raft of exciting recipes so that he doesn't notice what is missing;)

@running elley: how is is going? Are you on track?

  8. CupQuakeWalk

    coconut / 8475 posts

@looch: there isn't any daily menu or anything but if you follow this food pyramid, you'll be on track. Nothing processed and no grains an no dairy and no legumes is the very general idea.

I am going to do this and this time I am not going to go over it with dh, I am just going to go for it. He won't do it with me and his complaining takes my motivation away. Now I just need to learn how to cook paleo....

  10. Running Elley

    coconut / 8681 posts

@lovelyseeker: You're already basically there! I don't think it would be a hard transition

@plantains: Pshhhht. Whatever. I didn't even tell DH. I do all of the cooking anyway sooooo he will just have to go with it So there!

@LovelyPlum: I'd totally wait until after the first tri. There's NO way I would've been able to do this in the first tri.

@mrskc: Almond butter with a banana is really yummy! Definitely not the same as oatmeal but...pretty good actually!

I did start today! They don't encourage smoothies for breakfast but I had a green smoothie for breakfast and I just had some almonds and raisins as a snack. I have grilled chicken that I'm going to have with some steamed squash and baby carrots for lunch. We're going out for dinner so that should be interesting but I'm going with my sister who is really strict paleo so she'll help me figure something out

@cyndistar3: Yeah I do stuff like this pretty often and I've learned that there's no point in telling DH lol.

    Oh food ideas-

-Oven roasted veggies (a little olive oil/coconut oil, some sea salt and black pepper on a cookie sheet and roasted in the oven for awhile)
-Any kebobs (chicken, beef, lamb with veggies and pineapple)
-Almond flour crusted baked chicken (chicken dipped in egg wash and lightly breaded with almond flour and spices/seasonings baked in the oven)

Following this thread I try to do a couple of paleo meals a week, hoping to step up my game and make it more of a lifestyle change though.

I want to do this SO bad - but DH *has* to have some sort of starch (rice, pasta, tortilla, bread, potatoes etc) with his dinner or else he complains that it wasn't a real meal. It's not that I don't want to make 2 separate dinners, it's that starch is my kryptonite! If it's around, I am powerless to resist it.
Plus, every Friday is family dinner night with the IL's and 95% of the time it's pizza... o.O

I sure do want to try though...

Last night was totally paleo (for me) though! I pan seared some chicken and roasted veggies (beets, carrots, onions, garlic and zucchini). I put DH's chicken between bread as a sandwich so he could have his starch

  14. Running Elley

    coconut / 8681 posts

@swurlygurl: My husband is the exact same way. I oven roast sweet potatoes (cubed) and he really likes those. I also shred them and make them into a hash and he likes that too! We do keep starches in the house because he HAS to have a sandwich for lunch and it's really hard to resist sometimes!

Once baby's here and we're settled again, DH and I both want to try Whole30/paleo diets. We're already low-carb, but there are some more changes we'd like to make. Following the thread for ideas!

@swurlygurl: In addition to sweet potato you could try baked butternut squash and also cauliflower. Yummy. This recipe is great, just skip sprinkling chees on top.

@Plantains, oh i totally do that to my DH. I just make it. He misses the bread and pasta and such, and he gets burgers for lunch at work...but honestly, he's not going to make himself MORE food after I make us dinner, so he just eats what I make. And he doesn't complain because then I would just make myself dinner ONLY and tell him to fly a kite, lol.

I will say that 95% of the things I make are quite good and I throw a regular potato or rice on the side of his plate every now and then. Or make him biscuits, etc. We keep bread, but I don't touch it. I haven't had it in so long, I have no desire for it.

I think if you cook creatively enough and it's good, you don't really miss it! And I know with the baby, meals are VERY simple and quick. Nothing at all like they used to be.

I have a list of all the paleo meals we've been eating the past few weeks while I work. If anyone wants it, wall post me.

I think I may have DH on board. He is always exhausted and feels like crap a lot of the time, and he always blames his work (cop on graveyard shift). I told him its probably what he eats! So. Much. Crap.

One question - I am taking lecithin and More Milk Plus capsules. From what I understand from reading the plan, these aren't allowed (soy and gluten). I am really hesitant to drop these since I'm prone to clogged ducts and my milk supply is up and down. How should I handle that?

  19. blackbird

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@grizz, take the supplements. It's not all or nothing. I wouldn't even "count" them

Even following the plan 95% is going to be excellent for your health

You guys are seriously tempting me! I've been considering it, but haven't yet taken the bull by the horns. At this moment, I feel like I could do it, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch from the way I already cook. Although, I'm not sure I want to cut out dairy- considering it's raw and grass-fed from our own cow. Anybody have an argument for why I should? And someone tell me- is vinegar allowed? What about kombucha?

The concept of paleo intrigues me but I cant give up dairy. I love milk way too much.

I want to give it a go. I am going to try to start this weekend when I have a chance to figure out what to eat. I have been trying to break my starch habits but it is so hard. I think I need to just do it!

  23. Mrs. J

@FarmWifeGina: Vinegar. NEW! All vinegar, with the exception of malt vinegar (which generally contains gluten), is allowed during your Whole30. This includes white, apple cider, balsamic, red wine, rice, and other non-malt vinegar varieties.

Ok, so I was starting to amp up to start tomorrow, but now I'm thinking probably not. Not for a few weeks anyways, to where we've gotten through the bulk of the craziness of wheat harvest and field meals and all that jazz. I know there's never a perfect time for anything like this, but Farmer Man says he'll do it with me then and that would just be so beyond super helpful. I've done enough super restrictive eating all by myself! But carry on, ladies, have fun!
Meanwhile, I'll be staying GF and working on completely eliminating starches and sugar until we officially start in this household.

i'm tempted to join you guys, but are you guys eliminating caffeine too?! that would be so so hard for me!

I almost did SO good yesterday, but I got some fresh homemade bread from our CSA at work... I made 'sloppy joes' (not quite, but Whole-30 version) and was going to use cabbage leaves for mine and bread for DH's, but that delicious smelling fresh bread was too tempting and it won!

@zippylef: Primal is very similar to Paleo and allows for some dairy. Maybe the best of both worlds?

@blackbird: Like you, pre-babies I made the elaborate Paleo meals but now I cook the easier/quick recipes. I'd be interested to see your list. I'm always looking for ideas to incorporate into our meal plan!

  29. blackbird

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@zippylef, I was going to suggest primal, too! It's paleo+full fat dairy. I actually eat this way because I do 2% greek yogurt and grass fed butter

    @wallaroo, check your wall

@mrs. high heels, LOL NO WAY JOSE.

I am so interested but hesitant! I've been counting calories for 6 weeks and although I've lost weight - I think I need to totally cut out processed foods (I limit them) dairy that I allow myself.
