My son is 12days old and his umbilical cord fell off last night. I'm out of diapers and since the cord is gone I figured I'd give the cloth a shot. My son weighs just over 8 pounds and I have bum genius 4.0s. He looks like he's swimming in them. They come almost up to his chest and the first one leaked all up his back.. Any advice, is this uncomfortable for babies size wise and how do I avoid leaks? Additionally his cord fell off but the belly button hasn't totally healed. Is it ok that the diapers go over it?

I'm not an expert but it sounds like the BG's may be too big for him. I think I have heard people say that any OS diaper really fits better around 10 pounds. Can you do disposables or newborn diapers for a while longer?

I know the BG's say you can start at 8lbs but they didn't fit well on my LO until she was 10-11 lbs.

I agree, sounds like they are too big still. Ours only started fitting around 10 lbs as well.

I used newborn sized fitteds and prefolds until she could fit into the AIO diapers. They are much better at containing pee/poo and i was able to continue using the fitteds until she was 15lbs. I think i put the diaper over her belly button after the stump fell off.
