Did anyone start milk or a milk alternative before age one? I have about 1.5 months to wean DD during the day (keeping morning and evening feeds), but she won't be 1 until August. I'm open to switching to formula if need be, but I can't pump anywhere near enough to give her BM bottles. Advice?

I think I'd supplement with formula for at least a few weeks before starting to make the transition to WCM. Maybe mix your BM with the formula, and then as she gets closer to one start mixing with WCM? My little guy has a pretty strong stomach and eats everything, and we started mixing in WCM a couple of weeks before his birthday.

We introduced it at 11 months with meals so she would get use to it. She maybe drank 1-2oz at each meal. Then at 11.5 months she dropped her daytime bottles but still didn't drink that much more.
I would call the pedi and see what they say.

@lawbee11: Well, I go back to work when she is 11 months, so I have the next month and a bit to get her transitioned. I wasn't sure about starting at 9.5/10 months though...I'm reading articles with conflicting information.

the new canadian recommendations are WCM months 9-12, so I think you're good!

I started one daughter on a slow transition at 9 months, with a recommendation from our pedi. The other at about 11 months. The provincial standard where we were living at the time says that a transition can happen anywhere between 9-12 months for most infants.

My niece's pedi said that she could start (just introduce and give a bit once a day) and my niece is 8.5 months.

I actually asked my doctor about this at her 9 month appointment because she's only ever had formula a couple times, so I didn't necessarily want to introduce it just to take it away again at 12 months. I go back to work when she's a full year old, but intend to slowly wean her from day time feeds as well in that last month-month and a half. He took her size into account and said to go ahead and just start replacing , but if she'd been below the 50th percentile for weight he would have suggested supplementing with formula rather than going to cow's milk "early".

I started at 9.5 months on the recommendation of my ped. We gave DD a few ounces in a straw cup at meals to get her used to it, and I mixed a bit of WCM into her BM bottles (maybe 1/2 ounce) when I couldn't pump enough.
My ped said it would be better to start WCM than to start formula (which DD never had) and then transition again.

@Sapphiresun: awesome! I'll have to see what the doc says though- I think she's below 50% for weight. @septca: that makes sense- just one transition.
Thanks everyone for your input! Glad to see that all of the articles saying 'absolutely NOT before one' aren't totally true.

We started at 11 months with a bottle or two a day as part of the weaning process.

we started almond milk at 11 months...slowly adding it in, just after his first birthday he was fully transitioned. if was any earlier than that we would've used formula

@redsmarties: Our doctor said it was fine to start at 11 months. When we first started we mixed with BM and over the course of several weeks we got to 100% WCM in her straw cup, but she still nurses 1-3x/day too.

At DS's 9month wellness checkup, the pedi gave us the okay to start introducing WCM. I mix it in with his breastmilk when I don't pump enough that day.
