In public school where I live, it's a big deal if you start missing a lot of days. If you're out more than 10 days, you're considered a truant and all kinds of things get triggered....so I need a real sickness situation to keep my son home. Now, I think I got played last week because my son said he felt like he was going to throw up and I kept him home and was fine. The week before he'd vomited in school and again that night at home, so.....I erred on the cautious side.

I'd rather bring my son in late just to see what happens, rather than keep him home.

@Boogs: Yeah, I think they have to be forceful around it though. The thing is, with our school at least, certain funding comes from the state and they have to prove attendance to get that money. So, if you (as a parent) aren't committed, then it affects the entire population. I know for a fact that if you are doing the best you can to work around the schedule and communicate to the principal, he'll do what he can.

So far this year, I've kept my son home for vomit. I don't know what I would do if it were just a bad cold though.

We don't keep DD home as often as I would like to. It's not always easy for us to take off of work. We never send her when we absolutely should keep her home, but there are times I would like to just stay home and snuggle her when she's sick that I end up sending her to daycare because I can't justify keeping her home. She's two and seems like she has one cold after another, so I don't feel like it's really an option.

Today I am home with her though. She was throwing up Saturday night and still wasn't herself yesterday, so I kept her home today just in case. I don't want to spread that around, especially right before the holidays!
