My diapers stink first it was a musty smell and now its barnyard. I assume they need to be stripped, we've used them for 9 months and haven't had to yet. So how do I strip them?
They are BumGenius Freetimes mostly. A few elementals thrown in here and there as well.

Okay, so I had success using Squeaky Clean. It's a locally made product, but you can buy it online. The stench is totally gone and I was so glad that I didn't have to try and use Dawn.

Whenever I've needed to strip my diapers (rarely, maybe 3 times in 16 months) I just double the detergent in the first wash, and then do 2 extra rinses (3 total rinses) (making sure to not let them sit in the washer too long either, that's always a problem for me!!)

I do an overnight soak in Rockin Green's Funk Rock. Then I wash as normal, then do 2 extra rinses. And if the weather allows, I hang them outside to dry in the sun.

I do a small squirt of Dawn in a pre-wash, then wash as usual afterwards with an extra rinse, and dry in the sun.

Also, do you know if you have hard water? A million rinses won't help much if you have hard water. I have to add calgon to our water.

@jetsa: They make test strips (I ordered some but DH said maybe Lowes or somewhere would also have them). We have well water so that was pretty much guaranteed hard water.

@jetsa: Is there a nearby cloth diaper store? You could talk to them about the water in your area (once you find out what type of water you have) and they could recommend detergents that work best with your water.

We use BG 4.0's and when I was having stink issues I emailed them (Cotton Babies). They recommended a 1/4 cup bleach added to the wash cycle and actually said I should do it about once per month to prevent further issues. I am not thrilled with using bleach but it really works! I probably do it about every 6-8 weeks.
The cloth diaper store near me also recommended Allen's Naturally Stink Out (I think that's what it's called), it didn't work for me because I have a front loader and don't have an option to soak.

@Veggiemama: Bleach is what my local cloth diaper store always recommends as well if stuff like Rockin Green doesn't work for you. It makes me kind of nervous too, but I just rinse a million times.
Whatever you do, do NOT put Dawn in your washing machine. I used to work at a store that sold appliances, and one of my jobs was scheduling service calls and dealing with any problems that arose - I cannot even begin to tell you how many washing machines I've seen break down because of people putting Dawn in their washing machines. Sometimes it breaks right away right away, sometimes it takes awhile before it starts causing problems. But it's expensive to fix, it voids your warranty, and it's just not meant to go in a washing machine. I always see people online saying it's fine and not bad, but I have lots of personal experience that says otherwise.

BG recommends bleach. Dawn is a horrible idea for reasons @wonderstruck: said. Also, we have hard water and use Tide Ultra Original to wash. I've only had to do the bleach wash 2-3 times since starting to use it over a year ago.

@Weagle: @wonderstruck: I emailed BG bc I think he may have a yeast infection as well they said 1 tsp dawn and 1/4 cup bleach so I'm stuck. Also I've used just bleach it doesn't fix the stink issue

Oh, and I had to switch to Tide Original because the fancy CD detergents just weren't cutting it. (Also have hard water, not sure if that's why)

@jetsa: How weird! I'm quite surprised that they said that. What water temp are you using? For stripping it should be as hot as possible - I don't really like using really hot water, but for stripping I've found it to be necessary. I would try to find out whether or not you have hard water in your area, because like PPs said that can have a pretty big impact.

Ok I bought Allen's stink out and the RLR Laundry treatment, I'm going to start there and only go to dawn if they don't work

What about just boiling them? It's time consuming and requires more work on your end, but no worries on what kind of water you have, no bleach, and the smell once they're boiled is so clean!

@jetsa: I don't have any recommendations other than my local cloth diaper service. I can wall you their contact information so you can see if you can send the diapers, have them stripped, and send them back. It takes about a week for them to strip them.

@jetsa: Oh no! Sorry you're having issues again, did you try the bleach again? I notice with my LO he starts to get a little red and I notice the stink and that's what clues me in to do a cycle with bleach. Also maybe try sunning them? I haven't done it but I know a lot of people says it really helps with stink and stains. Are the Freetimes or Elementals cotton on the inside and do you notice a difference in your LO's rash using the cotton?
