No clue what category this belongs it.....
Reaching out to moms who are good at removing stinky odors....
DS has a packit lunch bag (not machine washable) that unfortunately had a milk cup spill/leak inside it last week. It smells awful. I first washed the outside under the sink that afternoon when we got home.
Still stinky....washed in a bucket with dawn....then clean water then dried overnight. Still stinky.
Any ideas on how to get the sour milk stink out without ruining the lunchbox?

Random thought what about putting a baking soda box (or sprinkle it maybe) or a couple of those active charcoal shoe inserts in there for a couple days? Both are supposed to eat up odors. Not sure how they work on milk but maybe worth a shot - I do think the charcoal ones work on shoes and both seem like bacterial issues.

@bhbee: SO I think it is the outer surface actually - the inside is wipeable but the outside is fabric....

@meadow: If it's the outside, I'd try sprinkling dry baking soda on it, then leaving it for 24 hours. For what it's worth, I have this type of lunch bag and think you could probably wet the outside pretty heavily, you'd just have to wait for it to air dry - maybe leave it in the sun for a day or two? But I guess I don't know if that could damage the freezable filling at all - probably it's ok if it's not too hot out!

@meadow: hmm it seems like the fabric should not be so hard to clean - I wonder if it soaked into the inside lining somehow? no other great ideas but did see another idea about how to use vinegar here https://milkdot.com/blogs/news/16193197-how-to-avoid-a-smelly-lunch-bag

@PinkElephant: I like the sun........we soaked it in a bucket & dried in front of a dehumidifier......but I like trying to leverage the sun power......
Honestly it's not usable so if I manage to ruin it.....I haven't lost anything. But these aren't cheap bags so I'd live if I found a cleaning method that works!

I'd try vinegar and water mixture. Or you could try Nature's Miracle. I used to use it to get pet stains out but it is an enzyme based cleaner. You could also try Folex, that is the only thing that got the milk stink out of my jeep carpet when a sippy cup was abandoned and leaked for a weekend.

I would also rinse in vinegar and then let it sit outside in the sun.

At this point, I'd zip it up and throw it in the washing machine and dry it in the sun. If it's zipped, the linking is less likely to be damaged.

Bucket of water with vinegar/couple drops essential oils & scrubbing ultimately did the trick!!! Never got to try leaving it in the sun because we didn't get around to washing it until like 8pm each time.
Just wanted to post a conclusion!!
