Yes, I have done this MANY times. As a military spouse, I have utilized storage when we moved into transitional homing (* apartments before one's house is ready) when moving cross-country, and also when we have moved from the mainland to HI (and back) many times. All of these moves require that one only uses a fraction of his/her household goods; therefore, storage is necessary. We CHOSE to pack the units by ourself because I am a bit of a perfectionist and because I know that during most military moves SOMETHING (fine, MANY items) of mine gets dinged, scratched, or broken.
From a seasoned storage-unit-vet, my advice is as follows:
Opt to get a unit that is temperature controlled from a reputable company who uses security cameras and has an insurance policy for your goods. Some do not offer insurance policies but, if you read the fine print, there is some level of liability on them for certain circumstances under their insurance. First floor outside units are great if you have tons of large items (* curio cabinets, desks, headboards, etc) but 2nd story inner units may be better if you are storing smaller items or valuables (* art, books, clothing, etc). Sizing is based on need - estimate how big of a room all of your items would fill and pack it from the back to front and by lining walls inward for the most cubic feet. Check websites first and then make phone calls inquiring if they have seasonal deals/discounts, take AAA (if you have it) or anything else ... don't be afraid to mention competitor pricing. Also, some facilities run deals for a free month with nothing down OR 3 discounted months. These can be great deals depending on how long you need storage and what unit size you are renting.

See if they will give you a flat rate for 6 months. I’ve found with our unit they have random (Zane sometimes expensive) price increases. They essentially have us hostage bc they know we won’t want to move our crap out.

I deal with storage a lot for work. Prices really vary based on your needs and location.

First, figure out how you will use it. Do you expect to go once a week or once a year. If you're visiting frequently then it's worth it to have it close by. If it's infrequently used it's worth saving $20 a month to be 45 minutes away.

Second, figure out when you'll visit. These places can be sketch, so if you're going alone and at night look for something well lit in a busier area. Outside facing the street is generally safest. But generally I don't go alone.

Lastly figure out temperature, humidity, and dust. Humidity ruins most everything. I recommend if you're storing clothes, books, or furniture to pay for humidity controlled. Dust and cold generally isn't needed for household goods
ETA: my guess is people above are taking about "climate controlled", which is humidity and not necessarily temperature. Cold storage is for archival materials like old books and microfilm. Things you probably aren't storing

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: if it's art you hang in your house (as opposed to museum quality), you'd be fine with just humidity controlled. One way they control the humidity is through air conditioning. So the units are normally kept under 80 degrees, likely much cooler. Cold storage is like in the 60s. Like cold enough for me to need a jacket.

I had heard horror stories about storage units and bed bugs? Is that a legitimate concern?
