This comment really irks me... When a few people heard the name we would have chosen if we'd had a girl, people said that like it was a bad thing. It's a "mouthful" for a little girl and "too big" of a name.
However, babies grow up and spend the majority of their life as an adult so it doesn't really matter if their name was "big" as a baby because they grow into it eventually... right?
Oh am I just crazy and overthinking it?

My daughters name is long (9 letters) and we aren't using a nickname (the popular nickname is Maddie and we don't like it) and I've had people tell me it's a mouthful. Just call the kid what we named her! It's super annoying.

What does that even mean? Like it has a lot of syllables? Unless it's the name version of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, I don't really see how a name can be big? Either way, I'm sure whatever name you're thinking would be perfect for a little girl, or a big girl!

@hilsy85: Yup, the first name is 3 syllables and middle name is 4 syllabes. Our last name is only 2 so it balances it out.

I feel like you get used to whatever the name is either way. I thought that at first for my brother's baby and was looking forward to using a shorter nickname, but nobody ever used a nickname so I didn't feel like I should either. And now that I've been using her name for a month it suits her just fine.

C's name is 9 letters long and we do not call her by a nn. We use her full name. My favorite choices for a 2nd child are also fairly long. I'd rather my child have an adult name that they have to grow into than a childish name that sounds foolish on them as an adult.

I heard that before, and maybe possibly even said it (oops), but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I just think certain names sound funny on a baby because they sound really grown up to me-- I like the names, usually, it's just sort of funny on a teeny baby. Now of course I can't think of a single example.

@zippylef: oh totally agree!! there are quite a few baby "cutesy" names floating around out that that just would not work for adults. Ever seem Jamie Oliver's children's names?
I will post the name for you here and then delete it. I'm pretty open about the name and I think it's in other places on the boards but now that I'm a blogger and more open (my mom reads my posts) I don't want others to find me and steal my name

My favorite girl name was "Clementine". I got all kinds of looks and comments. So much that the thought of any child of mine having to deal with this reaction made me not want to use the name. (DH was never really on board, so it wasn't completely based on that alone).
I think the name is so pretty and thought that the nickname "Emme" would be so cute.

@Mrs. Pen: I LOVE the first name! It's always been a favorite of mine. Ours are Audrey or Caroline Josephine for a girl and Franklin Joseph for a boy.
As for Jamie Oliver... yeah, his kids have bizarre names. lol. Part of that is the culture here though. I've noticed the Brits tend to like name that we would associate as nicknames. Like, Alfie is a top 5 boys name in the UK. They tend to like names that Americans would consider more "childish". Baby Name Wizard did a pretty interesting article series about it, actually.

My LO is Evelyn. When we first announced it to my parents my dad said "well that's gonna take some getting used to."
People ask all the time what we call her for short and I say "Evelyn". Why does she have to have a nickname? I realize that when she's older I won't have much control if she wants to be called something else or if her friends start calling her Eve or Eva. But to me she's Evelyn.

Yeah this is stupid (when people say things like that). I am very against naming kids childish/cutesy names. As others said, you have to remember that this is their name forever! Same when people horrendously misspell names to make them cuter or more feminine (extra y's or ie's) or masculine (with a Z or something). I try to picture them being a doctor, or a lawyer, or the president, or a scientist, or being announced at their wedding, or whatever, and being introduced as _______. Does it sound like it fits? If not, it's probably out.

I missed the big name reveal but I think saying a child has too long of a name is a stupid comment. If your kid chooses to go by a nickname, she can if she wants to down the road
And nobody goes by their entire name all the time anyways
I'm thinking of names like Christina Julianna...3 syllabus by a 4 syllabus. Lame comment!

I hated telling people the names we had picked. When I told my sister we were naming on of my twins Nicholas she laughed and said that's stupid. I nearly punched her. Then she said people would think he was named after me. My name is Nicole. He is not named after me he is named after my husbands cousin. Even if he was named after me I don't see why it's stupid.
I say go with the names you like and ignore everyone else.

Our daughter's full name is Noelle Olivia, and I got one comment once where the director of a preschool we were touring said, "that's such an old name for a little girl"... what the! Completely caught me off guard. I didn't even know how to respond.
We liked that Noelle is a versatile name - it can be Ellie or Ella for those who like the "cutesy", more youthful route... or "Elle" and "Noelle" for a more sophisticated, adult twist.

@Oceanis723: why would someone have an issue with Nicholas? It's a strong name that I think is both boyish and manly. My little brothers name is Nicholas and I love it. @zippylef: we did the dr/lawyer/etc test too
