Check your state laws- a lot of teachers are forbidden from helping if kids are even allowed to have it at school. Up until last year, it wasn't allowed at schools at all without a doctor's note in my state.

Mineral sunscreens last much longer since the protection comes from a physical barrier rather than a chemical that absorbs the UV rays. If you are worried about it lasting all day that may be a good option.

When it gets really bad they stay inside. Other than that we just apply at home. So far no issues. I know my dd wouldn't do it though. They put their backpacks away so it would require her remembering and going to her backpack separate from the class. She barely wants to ask to go to the bathroom when it's not recess so that's not gonna happen.

@kiddosc: Can you get in the habit of applying at home every morning? One of the medications I'm on makes me very sensitive to sun, and I'm pretty fair anyway. I work in a school and even short-term things like after school bus duty (like 10-15 minutes in the sun) can give me a burn. I kept forgetting my hat, forgetting sun screen, forgetting stuff to cover my arms. So then I finally bought myself a lotion with SPF, and I put it on every morning, and that really does help. I use Aveeno positively radiant "sheer daily moisturizer with spf30" on my arms and legs, and I have a variety of CC/BB creams with 50spf for my face and neck.

Since I was already applying lotion after a shower, that's the only consistent thing I've been able to do to help with the sun issue. And they aren't greasy/smelly like regular sunscreen.

I think it’s so outrageous that teachers aren’t allowed to help kids put sunscreen on. These kids are little! When I worked at daycare we were allowed to apply it to the kids and when I worked in a school as an ECE I would help kids if they needed it (like really struggling) but we have a bit more leniency than teachers and our job description allows for more care like that. Another thing we tried to encourage was getting kids to help each other out for hard to reach areas. There’s often an older or more mature kid who really has their crap together and likes “mothering” and helping kids out.

So, give your kid a face stick, excellent idea, and ask them to ask their friends for help or the teacher and the teacher can direct student help. And teachers can do aerosol if you have that which is at least helpful for school. Even though aerosol sucks it might be worth it just so they can have proper coverage while at school.

@kiddosc: That's my favorite sunscreen! The stick is large enough that it is awkward to get good application around little bends (like the nose) but it does seem like it manages to do a good job if I swipe across my forehead, cheeks, chin, down the center of my nose and then just rub all over. I think I get better coverage with it (deodorant sized) than using the little Water Babies sized sticks and trying to get the tiny lines of coverage to meet up.

@Grace: He doesn't like the ones I have, he says they are too sticky. But I'm going to try the one posted above, my friend says it goes on much smoother than other ones she has tried.

Whaaat! I can only imagine what a mess it must turn into when all the Kindergarteners are slathering up. I vividly recall my teachers singling out my best friend and I and putting sunscreen on us in first grade because we burnt easily. Anyone know why they can’t do sunscreen (I understand medication), especially with all the awareness around skin protection
