We need something on the deck - its hot as crap in the summer time - we used 10x10 gazebos in the past but the wind ends up ripping holes in them and then we have to buy a new one which adds up $$

We have one! Our sliding door faces west and we don't have any kind of window coverings on them but the previous owners installed a retractable awning to go above it outside! We use it A LOT. Not just outdoors but also to keep it cool indoors if that makes sense. I love it but the only annoying thing is when it's sunny and WINDY we can't use it because I'm too nervous the wind will damage the awning.

@Ginabean3: yes that the other thing we cant open the curtains that lead to the deck all summer because its sooo hot and sunny - having an awning would allow this!
Re: the wind
We are actually looking at getting the cheaper model that you wind out and then it rests on legs - that way wind wont be a concern.

My grandpa had one and loved it but he only had it rolled out while he was outside. I would think even with legs, the wind would eventually rip the fabric because the legs are secured.

@jetsa: the sales lady I spoke to said it wouldn't rip - so I guess I have to take her word for it - also has a 5 yr guarantee in case she lied
I just need some shade back there!!!

We have one. It came with the house when we bought it. We use it a lot, actually. Our backyard faces west so we'll use it in the afternoon to shade our 3 season room so it won't get too hot or to shade our patio. We also use it when it's raining so that we can still grill or use our smoker. Ours is electric so we just flip a switch to roll it out or back in.

We have one that you can wind out with a long handle. It came with the house and I like it for rain and bbqing and when it is sunny. As pp have mentioned when it is windy it is a bit sketchy to have rolled out. When it rains hard we have to go and push up on the end edges because the rain water collects on there and weighs the fabric down and I am afraid it will break it. It is what the previous owner told us to do.
