Surgery went well, the surgeon said it was very straightforward. He's already completely off breathing support, which I was not expecting, but is great. However, that means they're being conservative with the morphine, so he's not thrilled. And of course crying/startling after abdominal surgery just makes it worse. He calmed down after DH and I were able to talk to him and gently touch him.

@lilteacherbee: this surgery was to get rid of his ostomy bag... Not sure what the technical term is, they always just said reconnection surgery.
