I've been using the summer infant swaddles but E keeps breaking out. Then she gets flustered that her fingers are out but her arms are trapped. I don't know if I should go to a bigger one of the same kind we have or if there is something better out there. If I don't swaddle her, she smacks herself in the face.
Any suggestions on what to use?

We did a traditional A+A swaddle, and then added a second swaddle over that (no jammies, only a diaper so as to not overheat). That or the Miracle Blanket was all that worked for C.

we did the exact same thing as @Mrs. Pen shows in this post for a long long time. http://www.hellobee.com/2012/12/26/the-double-swaddle/ it was our saviour!

we used the miracle blanket and the halo swaddles. we're still using the small halo swaddles at 4.5 months!

Miracle blanket worked great for my super strong baby. Double swaddle would work well too, as long as it wasn't too hot!

We couldn't double swaddle (too hot) and miracle blankets only lasted so long for my babies (they were fat!) so when I switched to Woombies for LMW I was blown away!! SO easy to use and completely impossible to escape!! I was so sad to retire them

I think I'm confused about the purpose of the swaddle... we used to try to swaddle Xander, but he didn't seem a fan of having his arms trapped, so we now just swaddle from his chest down (and not even tightly). He sleeps with his arms up by his head. Is that weird?

@adira, E will sleep with her fists next to her head, but she startles in her sleep and hits herself and wakes up. Swaddling keeps them from waking themselves up when the cause is movement based.

K could bust out of everything. Finally I just got over the price tag and bought The Miracle Blanket. Truly a miracle! I went and bought another one a couple days later so I don't have to wash every two days!

@blackbird: Oh, okay, that makes sense. I think Xander's just used to sleeping like this now because he often can sleep through the night (fingers crossed this continues). ALTHOUGH I suspect swaddling would have saved us quite a bit of grief on Mother's Day when he decided to claw one of his eyes!!!
ETA: Xander now wears light mittens to bed so he can't hurt himself anymore, haha

@mrspen, awesome! I was wondering how long to swaddle for. I don't swaddle for naps, but sometimes DH does for the 4-6pm timeframe one because she gets most fussy then.

After using the Halo swaddles and the Summer swaddles, and having her magic herself out of them, we double swaddled her in receiving blankets, and that did the trick!
Although, now she decided she's big enough to roll over while swaddled, so we have to swaddle wean her - Momma did not approve this change!!

Miracle Blanket from week 2 on. When she started escaping that, we used the Woombie.

We have to double swaddle with A + A and a super tight miracle blanket on top, but she still manages to get out sometimes!

I am totally on the woombie train. Love it! G could break out of the miracle blanket and the double swaddle by morning, but the Woombie is Houdini-proof. Plus I like that he can still move his arms around in the Woombie. Part of me always felt bad strapping his arms down in the Miracle Blanket.

@Mrs. Pen: @blackbird: We actually swaddled until around 6 months also. I think the AAP recommendation is just to keep going until your baby doesnt like it anymore or they start rolling over.

@blackbird: I think it depends how long your LO "needs" it. My mom swaddled my sister for 6 months too. Neither she nor my son ever tried rolling while swaddling. He slept very still. Once we swaddle weaned he became a tummy sleeper and now is all over the place haha

We used an A+A blanket to swaddle DS until he was 4.5 months old. I used the russian swaddle (first video) instead of a traditional swaddle because it was much more secure. I put a folded receiving blanket inside of that to secure his arms (video two). We stopped swaddling because he learned how to roll over while swaddled. Until then, we rarely had any issues with breaking through the swaddle.
