Found LO on her belly this morning in the crib! What does that mean for swaddling? (She was not upset about it. Just doing her normal stirring, and she had gotten one arm free)
We triedx swaddle weaning a couple of weeks ago and it was a disaster. I hope this doesn't mean we have to stop! She's 3.5 months.

...Pretty sure that means you need to stop swaddling, unfortunately! That's what our pedi told us...luckily, LO hasn't rolled yet 
I hope there's a way around it though! Or maybe she's more ready at this point?

@highwire: While our swaddling days lasted longer, ours are long gone too (for the same reason). I had been trying to swaddle wean since 5 months (LO is 6 mos.), but I never was successful. Although it is still a work in progress, it is helpful that LO can sleep on her side or tummy if she wants.

Our ped said it was a health risk to swaddle after rolling since he wouldn't have his hands to roll back or help move his head so we weaned cold turkey when he rolled. I think its easier for them to roll when swaddled unfortunately!

Wow, your LO is an early roller! I agree with PP's that rolling means that LO shouldn't be swaddled anymore. Once my LO was able to roll on his belly, he preferred to sleep on his belly and it prevented his arms from waking him up. Maybe your LO will be the same.

Yay for rolling over!
LO started rolling over at 6 weeks so we had to stop swaddling super early. It was a huge bummer because he loved being wrapped up in his swaddle.

This happened to us too, ds rolled really early. What helped wean him was to still wrap his belly snug and hold his arms still for a min after putting him in the crib. Good luck!

Oh, as a tip...when we swaddle weaned, I would sort of hold him tight/pin his arms during bedtime bottle and that got him relaxed/not flailing around. After a week or so of that, he didn't need it : )

we did the same as merryc in that we 'swaddled' up to under his armpits for a while -- the snugness seemed to help a bit in the transition.

This happened to us too! We had to (painfully) begin to break the swaddle. It was definitely a hard time for us and took a few weeks. Hoping your weaning goes better!

DS is still swaddled and rolls over, once over he does one of two things: raises his head and screams until someone goes in and rolls him back over or settles his head to the side and goes to sleep.

Yup - have to stop swaddling. It took our LO a few nights to adjust to being swaddle free in terms of sleeping. It was actually a more stress-free than I thought it would be. Good luck!

Yeah, I think so. We stopped swaddling when C started rolling over in it at 6 months. Swaddle weaning is a beast, but she actually started sleeping BETTER after.

@zippylef: Oooooh - you have given me hope! I have always thought that LO would be a better tummy/side sleeper than a back/swaddled sleeper, but it's too soon to tell!
Do you just lay them in the crib on their belly?

@highwire: we had to stop swaddling around 3.5 months because of rolling. We started with one arm out for about two weeks and then went to both out. We were using the halo swaddle sacks. It was tough and coincided with the 4 month sleep regression. LO learned to sleep on her stomach about 3 weeks ago (she's 6 months now.) and sleeps better. I still put her on her back when i lay her down, but she rolls over soon after.
She doesn't sttn but I'll take 1-2 wake ups over 5-6!

@MsLipGloss: S is a side sleeper. Once we stopped swaddling him, he would roll to his side and find his thumb to help soothe him to sleep. He doesn't usually sleep very well on his back anymore and is almost always on his side when we go to get him in the morning!

@highwire: We need to swaddle wean M too sincce daycare can't swaddle her for sleeping. We can go through the pain together : )

@MsLipGloss: No, I put her on her back and we went through a couple weeks of her getting pissed off because she couldnt roll back over onto her back and then it was over. We went from 1-2 wake-ups to sleeping 14 hours straight 6:30-8:30am. It was GLORIOUS.
And she does sleep on her side or tummy most of the time.

We swaddle weaned the night that LO rolled over while we were putting her to bed. Off it came and she's slept just as well as before. The first night was a little hard - bedtime took about an hour or two longer than usual but it was because she was just so amused with her new trick! She wasn't fussing, just had become very awake and was interested in this new view from the crib
Bedtime now consists of rocking and cuddling until drowsy and then placing her in the crib on her back. Then she yells about it and starts to roll, so I help her a little and then pat her back until she gets comfy. Then she sleeps. I know some babies don't sleep on their tummies even after they start rolling but without the swaddle you can be confident she'll be safe whatever way she ends up preferring to sleep.

@highwire - we are swaddle weaning now. I put DD in a sleep sack and did our night time routine then put her down in the crib. If she got up in the night (which happened) I would try to get her back to sleep, but if it was a work night and I needed my sleep, I would just put her back in a swaddle. We've been doing that for 2 weeks now and it seems to have worked well. She's been sleeping well and on an off night I just us the swaddle.
Probably not the best way to do it, but it's working for us!
