If you could only choose one of these for your LO which would you choose? My LO is 2.5 (will be 3 this summer) and we want to put her in something for a month or so in the summer. There is a dance studio within walking distance that has a 1 month class for $40, I have no idea what the cost of swimming classes are but I know she would love that as well.

oh i love swimming so i would choose that. i'm sure your LO would enjoy either one, but it is definitely nice to get wet and cool in the summer (even if the classes are indoors)!

Dance. Because all the swim classes around here are mommy and me til they reach a certain age and I'm not getting in that pool!

@Bao: We just signed up through the Ymca - We had to get LO a membership ($20/month) and it was $50 for the 7 week class
A lot of High schools and Middle schools in our area also offer swim lessons
Or you can try swim clubs -
Check out local university rec programs too. Ours has 6 week sessions for $45

@Bao: Ours is $225 for the summer session. It's 6 weeks long and there are 2 classes/week.

I think we paid $135 last summer. It is 8 sessions ( I think) on Sat mornings.

Swim. Especially if LO likes water. You can do dance year round and get them into a cute recital. Plus you would have to be gear/shoes/dance clothes for just a month worth of classes.

We signed dd up for swimming lessons - I have to get in with her, but it's a steal at $38 for 8 weeks! Dance is $$$$ and I don't know if she's get as much out of it so I will wait until she's a bit older.

I was a dancer (up through college) so I definitely pick dance! Although swim lessons are a safety issue, like everyone has said. So...both!

I would do swim lessons! The swim lessons my son takes, after age 2, parents don't get in the pool.

Definitely swim! I have two DDs in swim, and I used to think earlier isn't necessarily better, but since I enrolled DD2 at an earlier age, I'm starting to re-think that. It's really advantageous to get them used to the water at an early age, if you can! Both my DDs are in dance as well, but we will probably quit for a while after their upcoming recitals (this month and in June)... Swimming though, we do year-round.

I'd pick dance since that is a skill I do not possess and often it's a group activity- dance squads, recitals. I've been comfortable in water and swimming since I was two thanks to my dad.
@Bao: are you comfortable teaching her to swim? Have access to a pool?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We have a friend with a pool, I could certainly try! Some of the places I looked into are $100/month...for FOUR lessons, theres just no way. The other one was a great price at $40 for 6 lessons at a local school but it starts at 7:30pm

@Bao: I could never teach my child to swim - I'm not good enough at it and don't know the basics of being able to teach the skill!
He has been in swimming for awhile and I definitely consider it a life skill too! With our YMCA membership, each set of sessions cost $40 for seven semi-private lessons (2-4 kids in each class). It we register early enough, it is as low as $30. But we pay for the YMCA membership too, so that might need to be factored in...

The YMCA near us has swim lessons for 7 weeks at $40!! We plan on putting our boys in them next session.

Swim. DD just started swim lessons at 27 months and she loves it.
