I breastfed until 2 years old. My son couldn't have cow's milk. Based on my experiences, I'm not sure why babies need cow's milk. So, breastfeeding should take the place of liquid calories. So you can keep going the way you have (we nursed 5-6 times a day/night still) or you can replace some of the nursing with cow's milk. In theory, breastmilk has all of the fats and nutrients that cow's milk has.

P is just shy of 17 mths & we still nurse on demand & P eats solids (like a teenage boy I might add). She doesn't drink cows milk at all, only has it with cereal (it's not "needed"). I'll continue offering until 2 & then let her take the reigns on when to wean.

It's not Any different than before a year! Lol. We don't offer or refuse, so if he wants it I give it, if not than no. Usually he nurses 2-3 times a day at 17 months.

The advantage for us was that there was no pressure. If I wasn't around, no big deal, she could drink milk or eat food. If we were together we would nurse.

@Beehive: how is it that we've almost made it to a year with our October babies??

I'm not planning on weaning Miss A anytime soon and I reckon one of the nice benefits of extended breastfeeding is that it fills any nutritional gaps that solids might not fill. I figure that we'll just keep trucking along until nursing stops working out for either of us.

R is 14.5 months and she only nurses in the morning. She comes into bed with me and it is our morning snuggle time. I regulated her down to that one feeding though.

Also super interested in this! I definitely ant to partially wean as I feel like I"m forcing some of our sessions now...I would gladly keep at least the morning and night session. I'll talk to our pedi about it at our 1 yr appt but I'm guessing you just give cow's milk the rest of the day and they nurse whichever sessions you decide to keep? I also don't think cow's milk is necessary if they get plenty of calcium in other ways...but not sure on that.

Part of me would be happy to keep 2 sessions or so until he's ready to wean, but then I think about wanting to go away on vacation without LO, or missing bedtime sometimes, and I really don't want to have to pump at those times to keep supply up!

@californiadreams: I quit pumping at 1 year... but also only work part time (and now unemployed again). I think whatever you're comfortable with is good. I hated the pump and had no issue with him getting all his nursing done when I was home and he would get offered cow's milk and not drink it. At least he wll drink water.
