My child is part shark and had 4 teeth at 4 months, and something like 14 or 18 at 1 year. My friend's kid didn't get his first 2 until 10 months or something like that and was slow going getting more, but it hasn't caused any problems for him.

My first was on a fast track and she definitely pretty had most teeth at her 18 month dentist appointment.

My 2nd was much slow like yours. At 17 mo she is def still teething and working on molars. We are not taking her to the dentist at 18 mo cuz she just doesn't have that many teeth! Prob will take her at 2 along with her sister's bi-annual check up.

@Clementine12: I think it certainly can be. DD2 got her first 2 or 3 teeth at about 9 mos, then got no more for about 6 mos, she now has almost all at 2yo.

Both of my LOs were late teethers. My DS got his 1st tooth a week before his birthday. My DD got 2 teeth around 10 months. Both of them only had about 8 teeth by 18 months. Dentists were never concerned. Now, my son is 7, and has still only lost 1 tooth, whereas most of his peers have lost many!

@Clementine12: My first was a late teether, and he could eat almost anything with minimal teeth. As mentioned above, the teeth are in the gums, so the gums are pretty hard. The front teeth are only for biting into things, and I cut everything into small pieces because of choking concerns (I would have even with more teeth). Late teethers do tend to lose their teeth late. It is actually better for the teeth to come in late - less opportunity for cavities.
