So. I just recently found out you’re not supposed to flush tampons. I had no idea, oops. But now I’m wondering...what do I do? I have very heavy periods so a used tampon is pretty...messy. There’s no feasible way to wrap it in tp because it would soak right through but I can’t just toss it right in the trash. I don’t know where else to ask this haha.

I wrap mine in TP and throw in trash at home and empty the trash can more frequently during my cycle. Unless I were to squeeze on them the TP wrapping isn’t all that messy even on heavy days.

Our building has lousy plumbing and they are explicit when you move in that flushing tampons is prohibited. Switching to a menstrual cup solved the grossness issue of disposing tampons - once I found the right one for my body, it's been awesome.

When I still used tampons I just had a tiny trash can with a lid and liner and just put them in there with no wrapping. Wrapping them in tp just seemed wasteful to me. I now use a cup and it is immensely more comfortable and easier now that I have the hang of it

i just wrap them in toilet paper, its not really been an issue. I grew up in a house with old plumbing so I have never in my life flushed a tampon!

I cannot imagine throwing them away in a trash can. I flush them down my toilet and any other toilet. I can't imagine it would truly create a problem unless you have a septic tank or super old plumbing and pipes.

@agold: the two times that I have had plumbers come out and work on our pipes, they have warned us both times to not flush anything but toilet paper. Tampons expand pretty large, and they don't dissolve, so they end up blocking pipes. We have a very new house.
There actually was an incredibly long Thread about this like 2 years ago, where half of hellobee was horrified that people were flushing tampons and the other half of hellobee was shocked that people throw them in the trash.
To answer the original question, I usually place it in the unwrapped, plastic sleeve of the next tampon that I'm about to use, and then wrap it in toilet paper. Another idea is you could use snack size plastic bags, keep some in the bathroom and keep them in your purse where you would also keep tampons.

@agold: we had new plumbing in a rental house we lived in and had all sorts of issues because the previous renter flushed tampons. And we know it was caused by tampons, the plumber found them
all it takes is one getting stuck and you have a giant headache.

@Jennibenni: I wrap in about 10000 layers of tp because I bleed a lot.
I always flushed until we moved a couple years ago and now have a septic system.

I used to flush until I moved into an older home and discovered how expensive plumbers are. Now, wrap and trash 100%!

My whole life i flushed until we movd to our current house and our sewer line started backing up .......after a few months i realized it coincided with my cycle. My husband would snake the line and it was awful.
Our house is about 60 years old and we definitely have tiny roots growing in the sewer line in the front yard which doesnt help matters.
We've had no problems since I stopped flushing. I keep a roll of papertowels in the bathroom and wrap in one of those before throwing in the trash.
In public with super flushing toilets.....i totally flush. Haha
