We actually have a whole series of them, they're adorable and a big hit with my 5 year old. We also have Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Albert Einstein, Jane Goodall, and Amelia Earhart.

Honestly, I’m not looking forward to teaching my kid about MLK and the Civil Rights movement. I feel like once you open the door that it’s hard not to see things in black vs white, us vs them no matter how well-intentioned. At least that’s how it was for me when I understood the images and stories I was presented with.

Southern Poverty Law Center has a great website called Teaching Tolerance. It is geared at teachers, but there are preschool and kinder lessons on there that you might be able to adapt!

DD had a workbook and I pulled it out of her school folder later in the day. “Mama that’s Dr. King!” Pretty good for 3.

We talk about a few equality concepts that are age appropriate. I think she’s a bit young- but I love the idea of the books above.

So many good book recommendations and resources. By educating yourself, it will help conversations to flow naturally and continue past MLK day. Learning more about MLK is a great way to have very young kids understand and get on the road to digging at the roots of racism. It is so important to teach them that treating someone as LESS than yourself is harmful and that when groups of people do it to a minority it is very, very difficult to change. <This can easily extend to sexism, classism etc. Start general and keep connecting the dots as time goes on.>
