I had not heard of it until the Easter thread. Then today one of my fellow March 15 moms posted about it in our private group. I wonder if it's more popular regionally. It is so cute!

It's a big southern thing, for sure! I'm sure you've seen L in all of her smocked holiday outfits, and we have more where that came from lol. Personally, I like it more for girls than boys, and would only put a boy in smocked items until a year, but lots of people do it for much longer.

It's definitely popular in the South! I love smocked outfits for boys and girls. It can get pricey IMO so DD doesn't have nearly as much as I would like. My MIL found several things secondhand that she needs to grow into. I'm on a Facebook page where you can preorder outfits. You pay half up front and half when the order ships. The prices are reasonable too. I don't know about the quality yet since I haven't gotten my first order.

I guess it's southern, although I grew up in the south and didn't see tons of it--I had a few pieces I guess. I'm generally not into it for my own girls.

Definitely popular in New England as well.
It's cute but totally not my style, reminds me of all the things my mother put me and my brother in. I always joke that we look like pilgrims in our childhood photos, haha

It's definitely a regional thing, but I think it's adorable regardless. I also think bubbles are regional too? A smocked bubble is my weakness. We love smocking at our house. Hopefully @jape14 will chime in too!

I think it's definitely a southern thing. It's cute but not my style, kind of like monograms.

@LAZB: I love seeing all of you IG photos. Ah she's the sweetest. I noticed them but did not know they had a special name.@Mrs. Pickle: you will have to post an update on the thread when you get them back.@rachiecakes: yes! I think it's so cute but has an old fashioned vibe.
I live on the west coast- T dresses almost like me. Beanies, plaid & stripes and jeans. Ha! I wish I had known about it when T was an infant. It would have been cute last summer. Now I can't dress her in white.

@youboots: You posted this somewhere else and it prompted me to go look at Janie and Jack. I LOVE this. My son is getting too tall for bubbles - it's starting to look weird.
This is a pic from my son's 1 year -- [pictures removed]

I think it's more of a preppy thing because I've seen it here in the North East too! I know my mom loved to dress me in smocking dresses when I was little, especially for Easter.

I love smocking! I see a fair amount here in nj. I think of it as a preppy/classic thing as opposed to just southern. I had tons of smocked dresses when I was little. Lo has a bunch and has worn some of my old ones, too.

I think it's a preppy/southern thing. I live in NC and it's pretty common here, at least where I live. I'm a northeastern transplant myself but pretty preppy so I love it!
And like @LBee: I love bubbles. I have a few bubbles for DS for early summer (he's almost 18 months now) but DH has cut me off from buying more.
ETA: not exclusively southern, though. Kate Middleton has dressed Prince George in a lot of cute smocked outfits!

Super popular in New England. I personally hate it and my mom constantly buys it for DD.

Smocking on little girls is cute but I think little boys in smocking, jobs jons, bubbles, etc. look kinda ridiculous. Not a fan.

I thought it was mainly a southern thing. I think it's ok. It's super popular around here and always has been. We all grew up in it, mainly for special occasions, though. I see it more and more as everyday-wear in my son's school.

I love me some bubbles on babies. My little wore a lot of them last year. Like a onesie (for ease and comfort) but cuter!
I'd love to put her chunky thighs in them again this year, but since she's 15 months and running it feels awkward.

I'm a New England prep school kid transplanted to the South so of course I love Smocking. I put it on both my kids. Though I do Jon Jons on my son rather than bubbles. I would much rather have my son in a smocked Jon Jon than the stupid shirts that say things like "daddy's wingman".

My mom loved to dress me in smocking, we live in new england. It's definitely not my taste for my DS!!

I didn't know smocking existed until I moved to the south
It can be cute for little girls, but I'm not a fan of how it looks on boys.

I had never heard of it until HB. Must not be a popular choice here in Canada Some of it is cute on girls, but I really don't like the boy stuff. Not my taste!

@Truth Bombs: YES to the jon jons vs ridiculous shirts with sayings!
There is nothing more precious than a little one in a smocked outfit Growing up in the South, everyone wore smocked clothes. I love putting my 3 year old daughter and 11 month old son in smocked clothes!

@Truth Bombs: It goes without saying that we see eye to eye on this, per usual.

@youboots: So, I have tried googling it and still have no idea what it is. Maybe it's not popular in California?
nectarine / 2821 posts
@simplyfelicity: must not be! I still don't totally get what it is either.

@simplyfelicity: Smocking to the term for things like this neckline. It is usually along the neckline on girls clothes and across the chest on boys outfits.
grapefruit / 4321 posts
@simplyfelicity: @junebugsmama: Here's a pic of Prince George rocking the smocked look. The bit across his chest with the sailboats is the Smocking. For little girls the Smocking usually goes around the collar of a dress

All I know about them is they hold up well. My first smocked dresses have doubled as my baby doll clothes for the last 30 years. Seriously, I have no idea where the outfits that came with my cabbage patch dolls or other larger dolls are because they are all wearing my old clothes.
