We are looking at buying a tent trailer or lightweight camper to pull behind an SUV. Does anyone have one or experience? We only have one friend who has one to get info from. Preferences. Things to look for?
We for sure want at least 2 be preferably a king and a double. Not looking for anything massive. Looked at pop ups that were a 12' base. But not sure what else...

We bought a light weight used trailer that can be pulled by our 4 Runner. It's a Thor, I think. The Fun Finders are pretty light too I think. I'm not a fan of pop ups, we had one growing up and it was leaky and hard to keep warm. Of course, that was awhile ago, so maybe they've gotten better?

Thanks for the bump and comment!! My DH is leaning to a lightweight as he had one growing up. I just think that we will get more room from a pop up. I think our compromise will be a lightweight with pop out beds on either end. !! Have to buy the truck first. That is this winters project then trailer in the spring. We just came back from camping for 4 days and cursed the tent and air mattress the whole time!

If you go for a used tent trailer make sure the canvas is still good! DH's uncle told us this weekend that if there is anything wrong with the canvas, ie tears or leaks, don't buy it. The canvas cannot be replaced.

We have a new trailer by Riverside RV, it's a Whitewater Retro 155. I think it's 14 ft long and 17 ft with the tongue. Fits in our standard garage and weighs about 2000 lbs loaded so our minivan could tow it, but we use our v6 explorer and it tows very well, usually 15 mpgs, which is like 2 less than we get not towing. We love it and have taken it out a good number of times. It has one bed and a dinette that converts, so it's just fine for all 4 of us. Has a sink/stove/micro/fridge and a wetbath, also heat, a/c, and hot water. It's small, but we just wanted something to make camping easier with the kids (ie. to cook, pee, and sleep) and still spend the bulk of our time outdoors, rather than a trailer to spend a lot of time in. We live in the PNW so a tent walled pop up was not appealing to us with the moisture here.
Riverside makes a good number of very lightweight trailers with different options...even a hard shelled one that has a bed pop out the front window. We've also seen a ton of R-pod? little eco trailers around here, but they are tiny. Look into the total towing weight of your suv and what size hitch you have. Sway bars and trailer brakes are really helpful for handling and safety even if the trailer is small and light. Check into the size of your grey and black water tanks....think about if you want to dry camp or will always have hookups for water, sewer, electric. Decide if you want two dedicated beds or if you are willing to convert a couch or dinette. Think about if you can store it at home or need to pay elsewhere, and check with your hoa on any rules they might have.
