We have had or will have about 10 people bringing us meals for the 2-3 weeks postpartum.... Should I be writing thank you cards for this? Is that an expectation? I mean, theoretically I could... but the thought of writing them out, looking up addresses, writing & stamping the envelopes..... just sounds tiring. I totally will, though, if it's an etiquette thing. When they visit, they usually stay for an hour or so and I thank them in person.

I think it's nice if you can manage but absolutely not expected by anyone that has had kids. I think the in person thank you is enough. Text thank you is great too.
If you really want written thank yous done they would be a great job for your partner. The only written thank you I've gotten was from the non-birthing partner. She ate the meal too!

I've never mailed thank you a or received a mailed thank you for meals. Text, in person, quick email of thanks!

I wrote thank you's for the gifts & the food we received, if you can find a couple minutes I think it's nice, but I'm sure it wouldn't matter too much if you don't.

My husband sent out a mass email for everyone involved. And a particular one to the person who organized the whole thing.

I would just send a text or email. I would definitely want to thank them, but no new mom has time for formal thank you's. At least I didn't... Lol

It's nice if you can write them, but I don't think anyone expects them from a new mom. Of the moms I've taken meals to, I think I've gotten thank you's from a little less than half and often they were combined with shower gift thanks. In person thanks or a quick text is perfectly fine.

I would be slightly upset if I received a thank you for a meal! People do it to make your life easier. I think an in person thank you, and a text or email if you didn't get to say it in person, is plenty.

I thank in person when we get it and then send a text after we've had the meal "thank you so much for the chili, it was so delicious and so nice not to have to cook with a newborn."

@Foodnerd81: I know - I always feel a little bad when I get a thank you note for this type of stuff. Same for flowers or food when there has been a death. I didn't do this to add to your to do list!
I think it is cultural though because we are from the South and my mom raised me to write thank you notes for EV-ER-Y-THING. She made sure to remind me to write all my thank you notes for food brought when LO was born the same week.
So I don't think you should be obligated at all but I just subconsciously expect it I guess because that's what I was used to. I really do think a text or an email is fine, though. Or I've appreciated when folks make the point to say next time you see each other, "Oh, that meal you brought was so delicious, we scarfed it up!" or something like that.

@Ms maths: @Corduroy: love the husband solution! but agreed, a nice text message or short email saying they appreciated it is all I'd expect for a casserole or having Thai food sent over or something. to me writing a real thank you note is more work than just making spaghetti yourself.

No way! I heartily thank in person and usually follow up with a text talking about how yummy it was. Shoot, if I'd had time to write and send thoughtful thank you notes, I'd have had the time to cook a meal !

People from my MOMS club (mostly who I didn't know) participated in a meal train for us after DS's birth. I sent each person a facebook message thanking them. It helped me to connect with some new friends.

Download the Ink app. Send a thank you postcard from the app. Use a photo of the baby. Do this while you are nursing. The fee includes postage. You queue it up via the app, and they mail it for you.

People who organize a me train are probably not the type to get upset about not receiving a written thank you. The point is to make your life easier! I wouldn't worry about it and I'm very pro-thank you note!
