I'm pretty sure my LO (12.5 month girl) understands the word "no." She stops what she is doing, looks at me, but then laughs and does whatever she's doing anyway...
When will she understand/obey the "no?" Anyone remember when it started working?

LO is a year old and understands what no means but rarely obeys. She still thinks it's a game. I've tried giving her the "eyes" when I say no and using a stern tone and it works 50% of the time.

My son started to understand "no" around 1 year. As long as I really meant it (stern voice, serious face, etc) he responded. If I only partly meant it (e.g. if he kept doing something I said no to and I wasn't willing to get up and remove him or the thing) then he ignored me. In the beginning responding to no usually meant crying because he didn't like it but he's started to accept it. I also try not to use "no" all the time and instead replace it with a variety of loud buzzer type of sounds I can make. It usually startled him away and was he learned it was like a "no".

At a year they definitely understand but they are driven by curiosity so doing what they want takes precedence in their head over obeying you. LO is 13.5 months and this past week started going up to things he's not allowed to touch- outlets, oven, etc and saying "no,no,no". It's really funny but we try to just be serious and reaffirm "that's right we don't touch the oven".
