We got D's 2.5 year evaluation from daycare on Friday. One of the things they marked was that throwing underhand is an "emerging skill we're working on," and they added a handwritten note "He throws overhand!" I can't figure out if throwing overhand is good, bad, behind, ahead...? Should he be throwing underhand? Does that come after overhand? Obviously I can ask daycare, and I'm actually not that concerned about it. I'm just curious.

maybe because underhand is expected, but the fact that he throws overhand at all is good? i didn't even know this was a thing! ha.

I know that when we did My Gym, they specifically practiced underhand throwing. I think if you give a kid a ball, they will throw it overhand, and learning to throw underhand is a skill they get to.

I think that underhand throwing is expected to be mastered first, then overhand.

?? I don't know. Curious about the answer if you ask. My LO definitely throws overhand- and quite well! But he's never thrown underhand...

@ShootingStar: really? That's weird I always thought it was overhand first as that's how my 20 month old throws!

@illumina: I just read a couple days ago on baby center that "throws ball overhand" is listed as an advanced skill for 18 months and "throws ball underhand" is listed as a skill most kids can do at 19 months. So take that for whatever it's worth
