Yes, tonight M fell asleep with her thumb in her mouth. Apparently my husband sucked his thumb... Until 1st grade!!! Yikes.

LO learned to self soothe by sucking her thumb. She's now 14 months old and still sucks her thumb to sleep, when she's upset, and when she's tired. Once in a while she'll walk around the house with her thumb in her mouth and when she does that, I try to take it out. But then she thinks it's a game and does it over and over. She has her 15-month appt next month so I'm going to ask about it then.

Neither of us were thumb suckers. LO isn't one either!

No, DD liked the paci so I guess she never got into her thumb, thank goodness! We took the paci away at 1 year.

Wagon Jr. sucked on two fingers to soothe himself until around the age of two, when he just randomly stopped on his own. I'm of the camp of "don't stress about it until it becomes a problem". For me, the ability to self-soothe is more important.

I sucked my thumb until I was 4. LO started sucking her thumb at 4 months.

DS rejected the paci as soon as he found his thumb. He always hated being swaddled because he wanted his hands by his face and in the anatomy scan ultrasound the tech had a hard time trying to get his hands off his face. I guess it was meant to be! haha
DH and I both have perfect teeth, no braces. I wasn't a thumb sucker but DH was.

LO doesn't seem to be a thumb sucker (yet? he is 4 months). I sucked my thumb until I was 12. Years not months. Oops.
@mrs. wagon: I agree. If it's not broken, don't fix it!

Neither DH nor I were thumb suckers, but LO started at 6 weeks! He still sucks his thumb to fall asleep, when he's frustrated or teething. We're not doing anything about it for now, except maybe pulling it out now and then when he doesn't have a good reason to sulk. Figure we'll deal with it closer to age 2/3 if he's still doing it.

I sucked my thumb until 2nd grade when my orthodontist had to install a metal wire thing over the roof of my mouth so I couldn't get my thumb far enough in there to suck on it. Then they gave me braces to fix all the damage. Nothing my parents did could get me to stop.
LO sucked his thumb for like a week, then started sucking his wrists (????) and DH was not happy about the thumb sucking because of my history with it!

@duckduckkristen: bummer! For some reason it didn't mess up my teeth, I guess I really lucked out. I honestly think that everything my parents did to "make" me stop actually made me keep doing it.

i never did and charlie and olive don't. but charlie's little friend came over today, and her dad asked us about thumb sucking since she sucks her thumb (she's almost 3).

My oldest who is 3.5 now still sucks his thumb. I think the more I tell him not to the more he wants to so I'm trying the incentive route right now. I think it's getting harder and harder now that he's older. Oh well. He really only does it when he's tired and in the car sometimes. He's "trying" really hard not to suck his thumb in the car b/c he really wants this school bus that I bought him as an incentive toy... so far no luck.
My youngest (6 months) sucks all his fingers right now so I'm not sure if he'll be a thumb sucker yet. I hope not. I don't know if I can deal with two kids who sucks their thumb!
My husband sucked his thumb until pretty old (6?) but I don't think I did. At least not that I remember.

So far she's only sucking it at night - and won't take the paci anymore. It certainly does seem to soothe her for now so, I'm going to try not to worry about it..... I'm a control freak, though. This is very difficult...

Neither of us were thumb suckers. But m has been and it drives me crazy! Every time I see her do it I pull it out immediately!!!

LO loves to suck her fingers, her thumb, her fist and her pacifier lol, she isn't picky. I sucked my thumb until maybe age 5 at the oldest when my parents found a bribe I wanted more than I wanted to suck my thumb. I'm planning on going the bribe route too unless LO stops on her own; but I'm glad she does it now as it's her way to self-soothe.
