Wagon Jr. sucked on his first two fingers for a long time. He dropped it on his own, right around age 3, I believe.

DS1 is 4 and he still sucks his thumb. Dentist says we should start trying to get him to break the habit I don't see how that will happen. He doesn't seem to care what the other "big" kids are doing, what he can get as a reward, even the nail polish only works for a few days. Its habitual...he sometimes doesn't even know he's sucking.

I'd try not to push too much if the child is resistant. I think that is one mistake my husband and I made. It made him want to suck his thumb more because our pestering made him nervous!

@mrs. wagon: My daughter does this, too! When she first started finger-sucking, she was happy with any two she could get...whichever got in there first, she went with. Now (almost 6 months old) she almost always sucks the first two. I actually love it because it's helped her nighttime sleep a lot.

R does! She'll be 3 Sunday. Her dentist said just to casually remind her to take it out if it isn't a sleep time. I sucked my finger until I was around 9 so hopefully she stops herself earlier. DS (1) sucks his two fingers. I've noticed little blisters on his. Alas they sleep great, it is one of their comforts and they'll probably need braces anyways

Mine is 3 and sucks her two fingers. Lately, i feel like she has them in her mouth all the time. I now make a concerted effort to keep reminding her to take them out - reminders that she is a big girl and big girls don't suck their fingers. I've even resorted to telling her that the dentist will pull out all of her teeth! I've become so desperate because she'll run while her fingers are in her mouth and has fallen a number of times. Drives me insane.

My is 2.5 and sucks his thumb. My niece was 4 and my SIL bought a thumb guard. She broke the habit in about a week of wearing it. I think they tried the guard when she was closer to 5 years old and was headed to school in the coming months.
