Last winter, we told DD that the loud crashes from avalanche controls was Santa landing on the roof to check up on her; we told her that flashes of light was Santa's flashlight shining in her window. She was super into Santa at the time, so that explanation seemed to work for her.

This week we had thunderstorms and, suprisingly, she remembered our explanation of avalanche controls and decided lighting/thunder were also Santa's checkup visits! She got super disappointed when we reminded her that Christmas is still a long ways off.

How do you explain thunder and lightning to your toddler/preschooler?
