We live in a very wooded area- conservation land behind my house and lots of little wooded areas between the houses. So, nature is part of our lives (much more so than when I was growing up in the suburbest of suburbs in NJ).

Anyway, I’ve always half heartedly checked the kids for ticks and never found anything. DH and I have each found a tick on ourselves once and pulled them off no problem. We have the yard sprayed for ticks and mosquitoes with organic cedar oil or something. And it’s been fine.

Well this week I was running my fingers through my 3 year olds hair and felt something, a tick fully embedded in her little scalp. I wasn’t able to pull it out completely, we went to the pediatrician who also couldn’t get it all the way out, but since the body is off, which is the infectious part, he said it’s fine to just let it work it’s way out. I’m fairly certain it couldn’t have been on her more than 24 hours but couldn’t guarantee it. We will watch her for fevers or a rash and have a blood test for Lyme in 5 weeks. It’s probably all fine.

BUT, now I am freaked out about ticks. What do you do to prevent tick bites? Bug spray every time you go outside? Treated clothing? I know about tucking pants into socks. Do hats really help? We also found one in the living room the other day so it must have hitched a ride on one of us I guess. Two ticks in a week, one embedded in my baby’s head, and I’m taking this seriously! Nightly tick checks for sure.

Also my older daughter loves playing with the neighbors IN the woods. I’m struggling so much with wanting her to be able to explore nature and get dirty and all those wonderful things about childhood, while not taking unnecessary risks for Lyme disease!

I’m way out in the Boston suburbs and Lyme is very prevalent around here.
