@chopsuey119: I'm glad I'm not the only one not sure what they are doing. I know I've said it before, but I don't mind feeding DS expressed breastmilk until he's 2ish, but I don't like the idea of actually breastfeeding him much past 1. Mainly for the reasons above and because of "hands on" he is about me breasts and knowing what they are for. It's just my own personal comfort level and that is something that is different for everyone. My point is that I'm sure he is not ready to self wean at this point. I'm considering Doing the drop a feed once a month thing and in doing that would bring us right around 17-18 months so maybe by that time he'll be closer to self weaning? If I did things that way it would really be pushing my comfort level as stated before, but I would do it for DS, as I do with the diet restrictions (sorry for the rant and thinking outloud).

@chopsuey119: I might feel different if I had a girl! DS is 10 months (ahh in 3 days) and he still does not STTN or sleep in his crib. When he night wakes I try his paci first or rubbing his back etc, whatever I can think of to soothe. Anyway he will toss forever with his paci. Back and forth, arch the back, on and on until he gets boob. Part of me wonders if he's hungry because he's only starting out on solids, but the other part tells me I'm over feeding and he just wants to nurse because of habit. He doesn't act hungry most of those night wakings which is why I try not to nurse them. Ugh

@cupcakemama: thanks. I'm actually going to be weaning twice. When I say drop one feed I'm actually planning on switching to pumping. Once DS is completely weaned from feeding at the breast I still want to provide him with breastmilk for as long as possible during the second year by exclusively pumping. He has food allergies and we really have no other milk alternative that he does not react to so it's vital that I continue to provide him with breastmilk. I just hope my plan works.

@cupcakemama: I just personally feel that after a certain age our LO's know too much about what is going on. DS already pulls down my shirt, unhooks my bra, randomly takes a drink and goes back to playing. He also grabs and positions my boob the way he wants or when he sees it exposed moves closer and pulls it towards him. I don't have a problem with it now, but I feel when he can talk more or has a better grasp of associations that's just too much for my own comfort. I know plenty of kind who have or plan nursing for however long, and I think that's great and fine for them, but I'm just not comfortable with it personally and for my son at this point (maybe I would feel different with the next baby, I don't know). I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense, but it's the best way I can explain it.

@Mrs. Bee: it sounds like your in a similar place with Olive! I'm doubtful in the selfwean department and have a gut feeling we would be in the boob obsessed 3+ child category!

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards the droping/switching a feeding for a pump once a month or every 2 weeks. I think that might be the least traumatic on both of us and allow for DS to have some time to adjust between each drop.
