Little A is almost three weeks old and into comfort nursing in a big way. I'm considering introducing a soother, only at specific times, so she's not constantly sleeping on my nipple. DH is against it though because he worries it will stop us realising what her needs are and he thinks she's too cute to put a piece of plastic in her mouth 
Did you usr a soother? When? Did it go well?

I say do it, because it will save your nipples! And trust me, if LO has needs that are not being met (hungry, needs new diaper, etc) she will let you know! Pacis are not muzzles
we started using one after about a week I think. LO likes soothies brand.

I second soothies. The nurses actually gave my LO a pacifier while we were in the hospital. We haven't had any issues with it so far. She also loves her wubbanub. At 4 weeks old she's already able to maneuver it back into her mouth if she wants it again!

Another soothies lover here. I don't think there were any negatives to using one. I hope #2 loves the paci, too.

I'm another paci supporter!! My LO is/was a fuss-pot and after I forced the paci on him at 8 weeks he is now in love with the thing! I do worry about weaning it later on but it makes him happy (his face literally lights up when he sees it) so that is what matters most right now.
Anyway, back to your questions...my LO will let me know if he wants something more than his paci but there are babies that don't always cry if they are hungry/wet/etc.

@travelgirl1: if baby wants to cry about something he will spit it out and start wailing. I don't think it keeps babies from expressing needs. My nipples would be killing me after long nursing sessions.

My LO started using his right before we left the hospital. He enjoyed comfort nursing a lot - after awhile I could tell when he wasn't eating anymore and just sucking (the noise was different), so I would gently pull him off and stick a pacifier in right away. He would always spit it out after a minute if he was still truly hungry. If not, he would use the pacifier to help him fall asleep. I am so lucky he's not hooked on them now. We were careful in only giving one to him when he was really really fussy and we tried other means to soothe him first. Now he's getting into the thumb sucking stage which I'm not thrilled with, but what can you do?

We gave our LO a paci at 2 weeks I think. She only takes it when she is tired. If she is hungry, has gas, too hot she lets us know!

Do it. They saved us from her fussiness and my nipple from her sucking jags. She quit them on$ her own at 5 months.

Absolutely go with the paci - they are great for helping babies to soothe themselves and will save your nipples.
To answer your question, yes, babies will always spit out the dummy when they need something. If they're hungry, they will most definitely let you know - a paci doesn't stop them from feeling hunger pains, wet/dirty nappies, or cold/heat. The advice is to wait six weeks so that there is nipple confusion but I truly don't believe in nipple confusion. LO still ate at regular intervals, even when taking the paci, and if she was hungry at a time I thought she wouldn't be, she just spit the paci out after a couple of sucks when she realised she wasn't getting anything, and would start crying again.
We've had a really good experience with Nuk pacis.

DD loves her paci, and we like it too. We started with Soothies, although she had a hard time keeping it in her mouth. Now we use Mam pacis, and she loves those. The one downside to the paci is that DD has become totally addicted. When she wakes up in the night she screams until we come and replace her paci. Because of this we are now sleep training to get rid of the need for the midnight paci replacements...
