This is my first baby, and I know first babies tend to come a little late. Today I'm officially 41 weeks and I'm still only about 1-2 cm and 80% effaced. Very few contractions, nothing timeable at all. Over the past two weeks, I've tried everything to get the show on the road and encourage labor. Accupressure, spicy foods, pineapple, red raspberry leaf tea, eggplant parm, dates, walking for HOURS, bouncing on an exercise ball, sex - none of it seemed to do anything.
My doctor has scheduled an induction for tomorrow evening. He's going to start me on cervidil overnight and then start pitocin the following morning. I was hoping to labor without an epidural and really hoped to avoid c-section, so the thought of being induced makes me super nervous that my plan is about to be completely thrown out the window.
I bought a small bottle of castor oil a few days ago as a last resort, hoping I wouldn't have to use it. Now it's down to the wire and I figure I either try the castor oil or just accept my fate of a scheduled induction. I mentioned the castor oil to my doctor, who said he's heard of women trying it but he directly didn't tell me not to. He knows how badly I wanted to avoid induction, so it almost felt like a wink and a nod.
There's so much sketchy info on the internet about castor oil and it's frustrating to wade through it. Bottom line is, I worry the castor oil will leave me dehydrated and feeling gross, and there's the whole debate over whether it increases the risk of meconium in the fluid. On the other hand, I've heard the meds used to induce are no picnic, either.
What are other people's experiences with castor oil? Would you try it if it came down to the induction wire?
