My understanding is that Castor oil is an old wives tale. It will basically just give you diarrhea and risk dehydration. There is a small chance that the intestinal cramping could encourage contractions but it's not worth the risk!! At 38 weeks I tried things like long walk, bouncing on a yoga ball, etc but I never ingested or used anything vaginally to try to induce labor.

I would never try castor oil. ugh

With DD I didn't start to try to jump start labor until 39 or 40 weeks. I used primrose oil, red raspberry tea, and eggplant parmesan. It didn't work, I was still induced at 40 weeks 6 days.

With DS, I figured I would have to be induced again, so I started using primrose oil at like 36 weeks or 35, and he came at 37 weeks 1 day. But, that was all I did with him.

She was 42 weeks and had no signs of labor at all. Her midwife suggested a cocktail of castor oil and rootbeer to get things going and boy did it ever, haha. Otherwise she was scheduled for a pitocin induction the next morning, so it was a last ditch effort.

I don't think I'd even attempt it unless I was in her situation 42+ weeks and nothing, induction scheduled.

i was just reading about it yesterday in ina may's 'guide to childbirth'. she recommends 1 tbsp added to scrambled eggs or fruit juice to make it more palatable.

it doesn't sound very appetizing, but who knows what i'll be willing to try when i'm ready to pop!

I probably wouldn't because of the raised chance of meconium aspiration, but if I were 42 weeks and trying to avoid a pitocin induction I'd at least consider it.

NEVER at 37 weeks though. In my opinion you shouldn't be trying to induce in any way until your due date.
