My youngest is now 12 months and will be walking soon, she's very small for her age. She wants to be held all the time so I want to find a carrier for this summer where I can still have my arms free! I have been using a Baby Bjorn which I like, but I don't think it will work as well as she gets bigger. What do you use? I don't know how if eel about a ring sling (we have one) it just doesn't feel sturdy to me.

Any of the more ergonomic carriers will probably be more comfortable for both of you. Ergo is probably the cheapest option. If she likes to forward face look for a 360. If you have a babywearing international chapter near you try and make it to a meeting. They'll have carriers you can try on and even borrow if you join

I use the ergo. At 15 months 22lbs my guy is getting a bit big for the front carry but it can also be used for hip and back carry. definitely way more supportive than the bjorn.

I used our beco Gemini comfortably until about 18 months when she started to feel a little too tall for it. At the point the ergo was more comfortable. If I was buying one at 12 months, though, I would have gotten a Tula. I think a toddler Tula would still be too big though, the standard would be plenty big for a while, from what I hear.
And work on a back carry- so comfortable once you get the hang of it. My LO started climbing onto my back around 15 months (I sat on the edge of the bed and she walked up and wrapped her arms around my shoulder).

I used our ring sling until LO was 2 and then it got uncomfortable. We use a toddler Tula now and LO is almost 4 and it's very comfortable. LO is small (27lbs) which helps too, but it's a feat carrier

I can still comfortably carry my 28 lb 3 year old in our ergo. It is comfy with my 23 lb 1 year old as well.
ETA I carry them both on my back. They are too big for the front.

@Mrs. Lion: I still carry my 3yo too! She's leggy but she's light so a back carry is still reasonably comfy.
@LuLu Mom: as fas as I've read most kids aren't big enough for a toddler carrier until they're two as their legs just aren't long enough for the wider panel.

My 22lb 15 month old still fits great in a standard Tula. She prefers to be worn on my front, which is a little hard (if I want to get anything done, that is) since she's so tall, but the fit is still awesome.

I wore my 28lb 2.5 year old comfortably in my Standard Tula the other day. It's my favourite carrier for sure- and you'd be able to get lots of wear out of it still.

if you have time, i'd check out your local lending library of BWII used my beco gemini till 12 months and boba 2g from 12months to now (almost 4 years old, though it is definitely a once in a blue moon thing now). But anythink like tula (not toddler if your baby is small), ergo baby, lilebaby, abc, beco, boba, etc will work.

I have a kinderpack from my bwi chapter library and love it. They're more expensive tho and harder to get a hold of. I'm trying my hand at making one next week so that's an idea if you can sew

We used our Ergo until probably around 16 mo. Now we have a toddler Tula and love it! In hindsight maybe should have had a Tula originally, but we really loved our Ergo so who knows. LO is on the big side so that's why we had to switch from our Ergo. I think I've heard the back panel is higher on the Tula so that probably would have lasted longer - she's a leaner and I was afraid she was going to pop out of the Ergo even though she technically "fit." She just barely fits in the toddler Tula now (again, I bet she'd fit in a standard) but is so much more comfy than the Ergo was at this point.

I used an Ergo until DD was almost 22 months - at that point DD2 was born and took over the spot in the carrier.
It worked, because she was small and light, but if I'd known then that they made larger carriers like the toddler Tula, I might have swapped out the Ergo. Looking at how it fit, her bum/knees weren't really in the perfect ergonomic position.

Tula! A standard will last you quite a while even at this point. We have a toddler Tula for my 2.5 year old and a standard for our 14 month old. To me there was a night and day difference from the ergo.

@MamaBear87: are they difficult to sew? I'd love a toddler carrier but can't really afford to buy one at the moment...

Definitely a soft structured carrier like ergo Tula etc. my son is super small and ergo worked for almost two years. I have a toddler Tula too and he only now really fits it a bough it worked ok before. And now at 3 we don't need a carrier for the most part.

I love my Ergo and Tula but the Tula is definitely built to last longer. Typically you don't have to size up to toddler until they are AT LEAST in 2T pants and even then they are probably still relatively comfy in the standard b/c of the wide panel.

I own a Tula, and it is a great carrier! They are very comfortable, come in lots of cute prints, and they hold their resale value better than other carriers.

I have an infant and a standard kinderpack (my 18 month old still fits VERY comfortably in the infant size) and love them!

I can still carry my 4yo in my toddler Tula. He loves it, and so does my lousy back
