I want to start M on plates rather than just throwing food on her tray.
I was thinking about these plates bc there's no edge for them to grab and there's a stay put bottom:

I like the bowl but the suction doesn't always work. 
I would still recommend them!
We just use regular melamine plates and we try to take them away when she looks bored.

Regular bowls and plates! I invested a ton in special compartmentalized, grippy ones and they were a bust. G likes to eat on what we eat.

@looch: does G not throw them? All our regular plates & bowls are heavy porcelain ones and I know M can lift them up!

If we use plates and bowls, we just use our Fiestaware ones. If it looks like a child's plate, he's more likely to throw it, it seems. Maybe he thinks it's a toy?

we have the munchkin bowls but I really dont use any plates or bowls at this time. LO loves launching things off her tray so its easier to just put the food on the tray directly. She would just throw the bowl on the floor

We just started but have one of the boon plates and I like it! I have one of these http://www.amazon.com/Boon-Wrap-Protective-Cover-Raspberry/dp/B004KPTIUO/ref=sr_1_9?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1369858140&sr=1-9&keywords=boon+bowl but doubt we'll have a reason to use it for a while!
