BTDT moms - what type of summer shoe do you recommend for an 18-ish month old? It's hot here in the summer, so I want something airy and possibly open - and something that can get wet (at the spray ground or pool). I don't really want to spend the money on Keens because she is growing so fast. Any other good options? Are something like salt water sandals too open for a toddler??? Tell me what to buy!

But I know a lot of people love Crocs. A friend of mine received a pair as a gift and when she realized her kids could put them on themselves, she bought a pair for each child.

No experience yet but R got a pair like this with some hand me down's from a friend's daughter. They are from Target. They were great last weekend when she was playing on the deck and with her water table.

We had a pair like @Smurfette: last summer and they were great, except they took forever to dry. We're getting Saltwaters and crocks. Plus, the sneakers she already has.

I loved these crocs for my LO last summer (she was 19-21 months last summer). They stayed on her feet and she could get them wet and never slipped at the splash park. They are sturdy and she walked/ran great in them. And they were so cute on her feet - we got so many compliments on them last summer. They are way cuter on than in the photo

I would take out the category for the pool. Most good sandals are leather and you won't want them getting wet.
We had a pair of Saltwater sandals and a pair of SKR that we loved (easy to put on)
But for the pool she just used a pair of crocs.

@septca: Yes, but I don't know if I would make them your primary water shoe. Ours will also be used for church and nicer outfits, so I don't want to totally wear them out in the water. Target sells really cheap water shoes.

E loves to play with the hose and lived in Crocs last summer. I liked them because he couldn't slip and they dried super fast.

My son is going to camp this summer and Crocs and flip flops are on the banned shoe list, so he's going in his sneakers. I get two pairs, and at the end of the summer, we'll replace them.

Great - thank you all so much! We'll do Crocs or water shoes for the water and I will get a pair of Salt Waters for her everyday shoe. I have a pair of sneakers in the next size - for fall, but I don't want tod eal with socks and hot, sweaty feet all summer.

I highly, highly recommend Natives! They're the cuter version of Crocs
. My son wore them all last summer. They're super easy to put on/ take off, machine-washable and they don't get stinky. He had 2 pairs last summer and I have 2 pairs for him this summer (plus a pair of Gap knock-offs).

For what it's worth, I think the Keens are totally worth the money. The first summer we had them for L she wore them all the time and they lasted the whole summer. But there are other good options too so I think you have a couple you can choose from that you can't go wrong with.

we have a couple pairs of crocs and SKR sneakers and sandals (DS is currently 16 months)

@Sammyfab: We are getting these for DS's water shoes, super cute! iplay makes a knockoff version too, I saw them at BBB.
We got him a pair of salt water sandals from Brickyard Buffalo for day time wear but we won't be playing in water with those on.
