What kind of toothpaste do you use for your baby? Does your baby NOT like a particular flavor?
Do you use fluoride, or avoid it?
What about sodium lauryl sulfate?

We use fluoride free toothpaste from JASON (from Whole Foods). It's strawberry flavored and he loves it. Some kids don't like it so you might have to try a few different ones to see which one works for your LO. Fortunately our LO liked this one so we're sticking with it.

@MH.Abroad: I've heard it's best to use a mint flavor rather than something sweet so the child knows that toothpaste is not food.

@mamamoose: Interesting...Never thought about it that way. My LO hates mint so I might have to find something else. So far he loves the strawberry toothpaste and giggles before and during teethbrushing time. Maybe I'll try another flavor soon and see how that goes.

If he's really little I'm sure it's not as much of a risk of him getting to the toothpaste himself. But I guess the concern is if they really like the taste then if they get a hold of the toothpaste without supervision they'll ingest too much.

@mamamoose: He's 20 months old and he can't yet reach the bathroom counter so we're safe for a little bit of time. I was more afraid that when it's time to learn to spit, he won't know how because he thinks it's food. lol.

@banana: Wow, my babe loves strawberries to the max. I'll check out the toothpaste and figure out what flavor to get.
I was just wondering what toothpaste to get so thanks for the thread and recs.

@808Love: Oh if your LO likes strawberries then she might like it? My LO LOOOOVE strawberries too. It doesn't quite taste like strawberry (to me anyway) but similar. Kind of tastes like strawberry lip balm to me. But he likes it. lol

Sometimes we use toothpaste, sometimes we don't. It depends on the mood DS is in. We recently started using a kid spinbrush and that's made all the difference, he loves it.

At first we just used the baby oragel beginers toothpaste but now we use this watermelon flavored childrens toothpaste and even though she loves it she has never tried eating it and she is three now.

I'm confused on the whole fluoride issue - are babies/toddlers supposed to get some or not at all? I've read after 6 months they are supposed to get some but not too much. I haven't done a ton of reading/research b/c our LO is 4 months and breastfed.

Also somewhat related...does anyone let their baby chew on their toothbrush? She loves to do this...probably because of the toothpaste residue. Probably not so safe, huh.
@theknest: There are a lot of different opinions out there, with the anti-fluoride crowd very loud (kinda like the anti-vacs). I have no clue. I'll ask my ped next week. As far as I know, the doc recommends it.

@theknest: I think it depends if your water is flouridated or not and if the kids are drinking that.

My pediatrician said no fluoride so we went with fluoride free toothpaste. I'll ask her at the 2 year appt when he can have fluoride toothpaste.
@808love: My LO chews on his toothbrush all the time. We go through 2 every month because they get so messed up. I think most kids just tend to do that but we try to discourage him.

I tell my patients (I'm a RDH) that they should only use a fluoridated toothpaste when their LO no longer swallows toothpaste. You don't want your LO to get to much fluoride, b/c it could lead to fluorosis (white spots on teeth).

I was at the dentist today and mentioned that Maddy is beginning to start teething and she ask me if I was giving her fluoride drops. I didn't think it was time but she wrote a prescription out and stains .03 ml and .06 when she's 6 months.
As for SLR I steer clear of it. It's a huge allergen for me and my eczema, I've worked hard to get a SLR free home

My baby (6 mos) has a gum massager/cleaner/teether by Zoli even if she has no teeth yet... It looks like a toothbrush, sort of. When she has a few teeth, we'll introduce a real baby toothbrush and maybe a little toothpaste after she's one.
With my almost 4yo we've tried a bunch of toothpaste brands... Weleda, Tom's of Maine, Earth's Best... She's still learning to spit, so only fluoride-free ones for now. Dentist said she can move to a fluoride toothpaste when she learns to spit. At her checkups though, she gets a fluoride vitamin.
