I just ordered soft tiles and then read that EVA foam mats are banned in certain European countries for emitting formamide (a carcinogen) as a by-product of manufacturing. Soft tiles has tested at a low level but apparently no mat is 100% free of formamide even if it isnt used in manufacturing. Has anyone else read up on this and what do you think? Should i cancel my order??

Any thoughts, particularly from those who have soft tiles? did you notice any chemical odors when you first received them? Apparently most of the formamide emission diminishes after the first couple of weeks.

@Myicitygirl: Maybe just leave them out to off-gas for a couple weeks before letting your child play with them?

@zippylef: I am considering doing that, but wonder if it sufficiently resolves the risk. It worries me that so there is so little information on the products we buy for our children. What else in EVA could be toxic? However, I know that when you start delving into toxicity and safety issues it can become overwhelming and frightening because there is so much unsubstantiated and conflicting information about the dangers of everyday products we use.

I have soft tiles. I did read about this prior to buying it and I know some of the kiddie brands are actually worse. Soft tiles was one of the better brands

I have soft tiles and I love them. I did notice a faint smell when I opened up the package so we washed them with soap/water. I'm not too concerned because as @mrsbells said, the other tile brands are actually worse!
