We have a new TJ's not too far from us, I'm not going to go until it calms down but I need some ideas of things to look for when I do! What are some of your favorites?

I really like their guacomole. Cereals, trail mix, frozen berries, chocolate almond spread (which I like better than Nutella since its almonds not hazelnuts), seasonal items. The list goes on and on - I think their prices are really good.

@fancyfunction: I was going to ask about prices too. Thanks!

@Bao: We only shop at TJs. Honestly, everything is good! The produce isn't the BEST, but meat, cheese, packaged items, etc are all great and cheap. Nuts are super cheap, I like their boxed soups, and they have some great pre-seasoned/marinated meats. Our favorite is rosemary rack of lamb for like $13 (feeds 2 adults) - in the frozen section. Also the soy ginger cod is great (also in freezer section). Wild salmon, tilapia, etc - all great quality and cheap. Stay away from the chocolate section - SO MUCH YUMMY STUFF!

We like their guacamole, salsas, cookie butter, chips (they have funky stuff like black bean quinoa tortillas), my girls loves their maple pecan cluster cereal, coconut oil is super cheap. Their dumplings are Ok. The mandarin orange chicken is great for a "oh shit we have nothing for dinner" back up. The girls gobble them up! Every time I've gone their produce looks like crap. So I only really buy the TJ specific items.
We don't grocery shop at TJs. Only occasionally for treat items.

kettle cooked jelly candies
chicken nuggets
wine
caramel dark chocolate bar
basically, all junk

I like their dipper cookies and their chocolate toffee. They make some really good frozen meals too - orange chicken, eggplant stack, I always come home with flowers too
pomegranate / 3595 posts
I like their olive oil and pesto. The limited spices they have are good and cheap ($2/bottle). I also like the dried mangos and trail mix for snacks. LO really likes some of their bars and crackers too. We have one in walking distance of us and it is great! But we still do our main grocery shopping at the grocery store.

Like others have mentioned, produce can be hit or miss. We get lots of our dairy there (cheese, almond milk), eggs, and staples like pasta (the lemon pepper pappardelle is great). I also like a lot of their frozen sides since they are relatively clean and easy to prepare last minute (potatoes w/ green beans and mushrooms, sweet potato gnocchi, spelt risotto). And their blue corn tortilla chips, pita chips, and sweet potato chips are good and well priced everyday.
They also have a lot of delicious desserts like chocolate covered peanut butter filled pretzels

I really like the Champagne Pear Vinaigrette salad dressing. I miss it since we don't go to Trader Joe's much anymore. It's just too far from us. My husband loved buying salmon there.

we do most of our grocery shopping at TJ's these days, and I've found I save about 20.00 a week because of it. I do have to run over to a local shop for a few things (some produce (especially in season things that I like to buy locally), sour cream- TJs is disgusting for some reason, and eggs/milk which I try to buy locally).
So, some of the things we usually buy weekly:
-Organic canned beans (we eat a lot of beans, and I know I should make them from dried, but until I get my act together, these are great and cheap)
-bagged salad mixes/kale/spinach
-bananas
-frozen organic berries (if I haven't been to costco)
-frozen organic peas and corn
-bagged carrots/baby carrots
-single serve greek yogurts
-the big tub of european style yogurt (the container is red, its delicious and we use it in smoothies)
-their multi-grain bread
-hummus
-cheese sticks
-taco shells
-shredded cheese
-bags of nuts (almonds, walnuts)
-dried cranberries
-frozen fish (tilapia usually)
-tortilla chips
-hand soap and dish soap
-canned tomatoes
-bag of rolled oats
I have celiac disease, so I haven't ventured into the prepared/treat sections as much as I might have otherwise. But at least where we are (there aren't any discount grocery stores nearby), I've found that even for whole foods their prices are cheaper on most items.
ETA: I really like their gluten free quinoa spiral pasta, too!
pomelo / 5257 posts
@fancyfunction: chocolate almond!!? I want! I don't like hazelnuts so I can't do Nutella.
I second @MOMTOLITTLEB: that is my fave dressing, and it's healthy too.
I also like a lot of their chicken sausages for a quick and easy meal -- just roast with cut up veggies. They have a Korean bbq inspired flavor that's delicious.

My favorites include tabbouleh, flavored goat cheeses, horseradish hummus, cheap spices, reduced-guilt guacamole (made with greek yogurt), PB&J greek yogurt, pickle-flavored popcorn, wasabi peas, blue corn tortilla chips, coconut oil spray, coconut milk, frozen bibimbap bowls. I don't go to TJ's super often, because there's so much unhealthy junk that's hard for me to resist!

Uh, EVERYTHING?! lol. I love their frozen food! Their indian frozen food is pretty good! We also like getting this creamy scallop thing with peas frozen and just add pasta to it. Love all their snacks.. Mochi icecream... Ahh! So many things.

We do 90% of our grocery shopping there, so I recommend pretty much anything! I buy basically no produce there anymore. I find that it either doesn't taste that good or it's moldy the next day. (I do buy potatoes, mushrooms, lemons, and occasionally blueberries and haven't had issues). Their desserts (especially chocolate!) and cheeses id definitely recommend. And they have great frozen food for when you're in a pinch.

Olive oil, cheeses, Turkey sausages, sweet potatoes gnocchi, carrot cake sandwich-like cakes, their dark chocolate lacy cookies are DIVINE, and their organic boxed tomato soup is delicious!

Packaged produce is pretty good like shredded cabbage, broccoli slaw, shredded carrots, and salad mixes. Tiny potatoes, shallots, sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes, Persian cucumbers, and basil have never let me down. Not keen on their fruit usually.
Hummus, guacamole, and their dip section in general is good.
Cheese section is excellent - great prices on Parmesan and goat cheese and feta.
We like their Rosemary ham, chicken sausages, their applewood smoked bacon ends and pieces, and ground turkey.
We've had good success with their cereals.
Their plain flour tortillas are great, as well as the Middle Eastern flatbread for little mini pizzas or gyros. Their English muffins are good too.
The grassfed beef in the freezer section - both ground and the steaks - are wonderful. The Pablo tilapia, frozen salmon, and swordfish steaks are yummy. Naan bread, frozen rice, and frozen sweet potato fries are a great meal saver. The tiny chicken cilantro wontons are a fave of my son - perfect size for him.
Frozen French green beans, frozen pepper strips, corn, and their petit peas are staples, as is the frozen cubes of garlic.
We like their chocolate chunks for baking, but I actually haven't liked their baking mixes - they have too much sugar in them. Olive oil prices can't be beat. Pasta is dirt cheap, their tomato basil marinara is a fave, and their organic ketchup is my favorite ketchup. Their roasted red pepper soup is good and best prices on boxed broth.
Random but their bubbly water is really good - the berry one is delish.
The dark chocolate covered pretzels and the dippers cookies are dangerous. The chocolate covered shortbread stars at Christmas are deadly. Their plain peanut butter is drippy and creamy and so good. Their reduced sugar jams are the best. Good prices on freeze dried fruit that my son loves.
My friends swear by their sunscreen. Good deal on common vitamins.
Good prices on milk alternatives. Their lowest yogurt cups are my fave and good prices on coffee creamer and butter. Good quality eggs.
The wine has to be another post cuz there's a lot of great deals!

The hummus is so so so good. And cheese and three buck chuck. I want to go

I love their frozen meatballs, both beef and turkey. They make for such easy meals if you throw them in the crockpot with their tomato basil marinara!

We do most of our shopping between Costco and Traders. Love their pre-packaged frozen meals for lunch in a pinch/just to have on hand at home (including fresh pastas and pasta sauces), nuts, wine. We also do yogurt, milk, some cheeses (they have great string cheese), chips, some soups, salsa, edamame, and some of the pre-washed/cut produce is really convenient if not super cheap (hericoverts, sliced cabbage, asparagus, etc).
The samples are good too (if for nothing but meal inspiration) -- they were sampling a frozen chicken fettuccine the other day and I decided to just pick up a package of dried pappardelle and a jar of Alfredo, add some asparagus and mushrooms, and make my own and it was so yummy!

@gingerbebe: This is off topic but I always love reading your responses. You are so thoughtful and thorough and have so much knowledge and information to share. It takes a lot of time to be that thorough.

Seconding the Indian food suggestion. It is really good. Also cookie butter!
grapefruit / 4997 posts
@namaste: The cookie butter is my favorite TJ purchase! I eat it on waffles, crackers, by itself, bread and apple slices. I think I finished a jar in less than a week.
honeydew / 7235 posts
TRUFFLE CHEESE.
Dill Pickle popcorn if it's still available - OMG yum.
Frozen section! Their version of Pirate's Booty is really good too... The only thing I don't love buying there is the fruits/vegetables & meats.
Peanut butter filled pretzels too - YUM.
pear / 1696 posts
Cheese, they have fancy ones but also good prices on sliced & shredded. Organic milk. Organic produce. Nuts. Dried fruit. Yogurt. Olive oil. Lara bars.
For LO: organic string cheese, Inner Peas crisps, mini "party" meatballs, chicken apple sausage, freeze dried fruit
pear / 1614 posts
Great prices, good prepared/frozen foods with minimal extra chemicals/mystery ingredients which is a huge plus. Produce often iffy as others have mentioned. I do love their bagged kale (organic tuscan kale) and broccoli (organic florets) as both are pre-washed and cut and I can easily serve them as snack or side dish, or use in cooking or smoothies.

@hellobeeboston: Oh yeah my DH just tried their dill pickle popcorn last week for the first time... yum!

I'm so jealous!!! The closest TJ to us is actually in another state! (44 miles...I really can't justify the drive/gas!)

@snowjewelz: what's this scallop item? Is it in the frozen section?
