Just to clarify, I believe they were allowing him to participate in the meetings, but they just stated that he couldn't be a leader. I don't know that I even heard he wanted to be a leader.
I understand that it would be troubling to be a leader. A leader would involve helping new moms with latch and hold. As uncomfortable as I was with learning how to BF, I would not be comfortable with a man trying to help me.

I don't know what to think about this! Would a woman who has only breastfed through a supplemental nursing system (with minimal to no breastmilk production) make a good LLL leader?
It seems like he wants to have it both ways... he is very insistent that he's a man, and LLL is seeing him as a man, therefore under their rules he can't be a leader.
I would probably rather have a full-on female as my LLL leader, personally!

I'm kinda torn. While I don't like discrimination of any sort in any arena; I can see it from the perspective of why most moms wouldn't want a male as a LLL leader. I probably wouldn't just because I wouldn't relate on an emotional level.

@sloaneandpuffy: Yes, I don't like discrimination but you can't have things both ways. If you want to be a man now thats fine, but like any other man, you can't be a leader.

I agree w pp's. If LLL rules state no men as leaders and he is a man, then he can't be a leader.

I don't blame them one bit. I had trouble letting the female nurses help me because I am really pretty modest about my body. I wouldn't have wanted him anywhere near me.

That is an interesting point @sloaneandpuffy made -- would an adoptive mother or a woman whose glands are otherwise compromised, using an SIS system, be allowed to be a leader? Just to complicate the discussion a bit Anyway, I think stating the rules saying a man can't be a leader should be enough, without having to get into discrimination and other issues.

I think the point is that a leader should be a woman, no matter what the success has been with BFing.
