Looking for something very portable -- to take on the plane and in the car -- and preferably something we can also use at home in the first few months as a bassinet in our room. I'd appreciate your recommendations!

@NorCalWayfarer: I have the Lotus travel crib and I am obsessed! Has mesh all the way down the sides (breathable), one side zips open (has a lock) so the kid can play with it too, it meets the carry-on size recommendations for all airlines, transforms into a backpack, so easy to setup and take down...I could go on!! They also just came out with a conversion kit for the Lotus to transform it into a rocking bassinet. Plus their video demos make me cry, ha.

We have the gocrib by guava family, but I think they are discontinuing it in favor of the Lotus. I would probably go for that over the Bjorn crib because it's smaller and you can carry it on.... not that you could ever really carry on a crib when you're traveling with kids since you have to carry so much other stuff anyway!
The Bjorn is great too.

We got the baby bjorn one off Craigslist and we really enjoy it. The only downside is that it has to be paid for as extra luggage depending on where you go.

I do think the baby bjorn travel lite looks amazing. But I have no personal experience with it.... womp womp....

@MrsMcD: I love that you are obsessed with baby gear too -- I totally had a mental list of items even before I got pregnant

@NorCalWayfarer: I'm glad you appreciate my sick obsession. I sadly have more than a "mental" list.

We have the bjorn crib and like it but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you plan on using it as a bassinet because it sits so close to the floor. You would constantly be leaning over to pick up your LO. I would try finding one with a bassinet attachment that goes across the top of the crib.

We just have a regular pnp and it's fine. I agree you want something higher in the early days at home- transferring a sleeping baby to a low crib would be really hard.
So far we have been able to either take the pnp in the car or borrow/rent one at our location (hotel and rental house both provided one). So it depends where you are traveling. Just something to think about since the nicer ones are 2-3 times more money. That said I would not want to take a plane with a pnp!

We love our Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Lite. We tend to pack lightly so there hasn't been an issue with checking it.

I have the travel lite pnp, which is great as a bassinette too, but is heavier than some of the true travel cribs.

@lilyann: @Ginabean3: We also have the Lotus! It's amazing. So light and you can wear it as a backpack, and really easy to set up and fold up.

i LOVED the bjorn for travel. not so sure about bassinet for a newborn though. i have heard the bjorn is a hassle to take on the plane because of dimensions, like they make you check it. but i got it because the mattress was comfortable and my baby slept great in it - that was what mattered above all else! and it is so easy to assemble. takes a minute.

We have the gocrib too, which I love. We have traveled all over the country with that thing. I just watched the video for the lotus, though and it looks pretty awesome!
