So, my son came home with a low fever on Tuesday (about 100.5). I decided to wait to see if his fever broke on its own to try to avoid giving him medicine (it did overnight - and didn't come back). His teacher was shocked that I waited instead of immediately using Motrin/Tylenol. What do you think? Do you automatically treat fevers, or just watch and make sure they don't get too high?

Depends on how they are acting - my kids tend to get LOTS of happy fevers - I never treat those!
I usually wait to see if they are in distress then I treat.

I wait and see before we use Tylenol. Is your LO in daycare today? My center has a 24 hour rule after a fever.

I've read countless articles from pediatricians that you do not have to give meds for fevers unless much higher or if your child is really in pain/uncomfortable. The fever is simply a sign that the body is fighting something off. That said, I generally have had to give Advil or Tylenol when my son has a fever over 100 because he is crying from the pain and is miserable. But if a child isn't, then no need to give meds unless it gets worse!

My ped said to not give any meds if the fever is below 102.5 (39.2°C). I try to stick to that rule but have sometimes deviated from it when I know that the fever is on the rise but it is bedtime. I never give anything though when the fever is below 101.8 (38.8°C).
ETA: So I would have done the same thing you did yesterday!

At 100.5 I might have waited too.
@autumnlove: Our center is if over 101, then 24 hours out, but below 101, they can stay at day care.

I only give medicine if she acts like she needs it (fusy, in pain, or high fever...although she's never had one before.)

My DD has had a few high fevers when she did not seem in pain or distress. I only medicate for fevers over 102 - otherwise I let it break on its own. We dress her in light layers and make sure she is getting a lot of fluids and extra sleep and snuggles.

I try not to give Tylenol unless it's closer to 102, unless she seems like she's in pain/uncomfortable. But usually at 100-101 she still seems ok, maybe just a little fussy.

@autumnlove: Our daycare has that policy, but he was able to go back today since his fever was Tuesday. He slept a lot yesterday, but by about 3 o'clock, he was back to normal activity.

We were waiting on a fever but she was so sad and then her fever went up. I like to wait because I know fevers mean she's fighting something and it's helping.
