I just cannot get liquid medicine into this baby (7m) ... I’m trying tiny portions at a time (3/4tsp total) in side/back of mouth ... she is just so good at getting it back out (she’s still mostly doing that with food too).
Figure there must be some tricks I haven’t tried - thanks!

I remember being told if you blow in their face it makes them swallow. I can't recall how well it worked

I put a little formula mixed in his liquid medicine and offered it through just the nipple portion of a bottle followed by a full bottle. I also waited until it was regular bottle time, so LO was already hungry and eager to drink what I gave him.

@macintosh: That is the only way we could get medicine in my babies! Totally worked for us.
@bhbee: I would put the syringe way back against the side of the cheek, squirt and blow in their face. I would also swaddle so they couldn't thrash around as much.
Thankfully that stage didn't last long for us. Before our pediatrician told us about blowing in the face, I don't know how many times we had medicine everywhere.

Have you tried different flavors? My younger daughter used to gag and spit it out until I realized she only liked grape flavored medicine. If I did berry flavor it all came out- she would even gag to the point of throwing it back up- but grape she sucked down.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We did this too. I know the risk if that if they don't finish it then they don't get all of the medicine but we figured that risk was the same with the baby spitting it all out.

@bhbee: For my youngest I add to his bottle of breastmilk. Thats the only way to ensure the full dose otherwise he hides it in his cheeks for a minute like a chipmunk then just when I let my guard down he spits it all out

@bhbee: does she take a paci? We do tiny bit of medicine, plug in the paci for five seconds. Take it out, repeat. She swallows everything that way, it’s the only thing that works for us.

Oh man, I feel for you. We had to hold DS down while he screamed bloody murder and literally choked it down no matter the flavor. So unfortunately I don’t have any advice on this. But I did want to mention we moved to chewable as soon as he was chewing some food and it was SOOOOOO much better. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how many kid prescription meds they make in chewable if you just ask. So I’d try this route once she’s eating more solids. We started with chewable ibuprofen which seem to be softer than the chewable antibiotics.

Can someone please create flavorless medicine please???? My almost 4 yo still won't take any meds and it's a constant fight....chewable or liquid. And he's smart enough to know when I try to mix it into something.

@bhbee: Yes! I think it was Augmenten? Banana flavored. And they had it at our usual Target/CVS. LO loved them It made that looong course of antibiotics so easy!

@Mommy Finger: You can always ask for a Rx unflavored. One time there was a shortage of flavorings for one particular antibiotic LO was on. I bought crystal light and LO got a kick out of squirting it and happily took the syringe full of medicine. We have also put medicine on toast and topped with peanut butter.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: That's good to know! With my oldest, I had to squirt antibiotics into donut holes as that was the only thing at the time I knew he would eat. Now he's really good with meds.
For my 2nd, I'm mainly talking about ibuprofen/tylenol as we've been lucky to not need a lot of antibiotics with him. But getting him to take that when he's got a scary high fever is really tough. I wish I could just hide it in some juice and be done with it. And he hates most things so the chewable didn't work as a suitable substitute. Even the promise of chocolate chips as that's the only treat he actually enjoys doesn't always work.......

The best thing that worked for us was strapping her into her high chair (so we only had to control her head and not her entire body), squirting it in her cheek pocket (not back of the throat!) and then holding her jaw shut until she swallowed.

@maddyz: I was wondering about suppositories too. Is that available for all ages/doses?

@bhbee: they were game changing. Babies have to be a certain size to use them, or at least the ones we used. Talk to your doctor or a pharmacist could help.
