So, everyone says don't take a bath after your water breaks. But, when you get to the hospital, they let you labor in the tub. The reason for not bathing after your water breaks is for fear of infection. Is that worry out the window once you're at the hospital? It confuses me.

I could be wrong but maybe they only let you labor in a tub until your water breaks?? In my L&D room there was only a shower, no tub.

I think the tub too... really increases your contractions and you wouldn't want to go into labour at home. Where as at the hospital they sanitize the bath and have medical assistance around.

I don't know the answer to that.... but I did get in the tub at home before my water broke. And it didn't help at all. It just made me wet and in pain. I know it works wonders for some.... but not everybody.

I think as long as the baby doesn't poop inside you tubs are fine after your water breaks. Women give birth in water all the time.

My hospital has huge tubs in every room and they definately let you labor in them until you are ready to deliver. I think since they cleans their so well and delivery is imminent, that is why they allow it. I loved the bath and it helped my labor really progress.

@chopsuey119: I know. Women do give birth in water all the time. So, that's why I was so confused on why no tub after your water breaking. I guess I can understand they monitor you at the hospital but still. I just find it odd. You better believe I'll be making use of those jets in the tub my hospital room will have in it!!

I was in the tub for hours, but it felt like minutes to me. Labor really progressed well when I was in the tub. I loved it, and I am pretty sure my water actually broke while I was in the tub.

The tub at the hospital/birthing center/prepared for homebirth is disinfected and as sterile as possible. That's all I can figure.

We had both a tub and a shower in our delivery room, I used neither, but planned to use the tub. It was my understanding that you could use the tub from the time you were admitted to the time the baby was born. I made the mistake of waiting too long to decide to get into the tub, so if you do want to use it and you have a nice break between contrax, get on in there!

I had hoped to labor in the tub at our Birth Centre (it had huge mack daddy tubs and a twinkly star ceiling!) but ended up not being able to because my waters had been broken for over 24 hours. The risk of infection goes up and they don't allow it anymore.
I think the difference between a bath at home and being in the labor tub is the level of cleaning/disinfecting that takes place.
