i used to do my taxes on lacerte, but i'm no longer with my company, so i'm looking to buy turbo tax. we lived in 2 states last year so i'll need to file 2 state returns.... do i need to purchase 2 state turbo tax programs? or can i do two states with 1 software?

You should be able to do it all with just the one.

I have never bought the software, just did it on the website. What's the benefit to buying the software?

@tequiero21: I believe you can do it with just one. I believe the money part comes in when you want to e-file your state returns. You can mail your state returns for free. Those tax programs only help you with the paperwork.

I use TT every year. I download/efile the fed (deluxe) and I mail in my state. Go for it! I already got my fed return back a week ago. Woo hoo!

It should be fine, but I had problems with it last year because dh changed his state of residency mid year so we filed jointly with the IRS and separately with the 2 states - turbo tax couldn't figure that out. But as long as you moved together it shouldn't be an issue.

@bpcmarj: it's cheaper if I buy it from amazon than go directly on the site....
