We always celebrate my girls’ birthdays together with family, and usually have about 15 people there. Last year I decorated two (single layer) 6” cakes, and then I made a dozen cupcakes. We had a ton leftover. If you do double layer cakes, I think 6” will be more than enough, but if you’re worried, you can always make the 8” ones and send extra home with people.

Get two six inch cakes and cut the slices thin. Presumably if people want to taste both most of them are going to want a half slice of each and not two full slices.

Two thoughts (besides the cupcakes)....

(1) If the cakes are the same flavor, would people really want to sample both? I would think at just turning two, your kiddos probably aren’t making flavor requests - I can see how having the same flavor might become problematic in a year or two when they each have favorites.

(2) my eight year old and I share a birthday; we often request different desserts (cookie cake, a fruit pie/crisp, even doughnuts or breakfast pastries). This year I had a no-bake butterfinger pie and my daughter had a traditional layer cake. We didn’t have a party, but we just cut tiny slices to sample both.

When I’m at a wedding/formal event, DH and I just trade bites of desserts/meals, so I wouldn’t worry too much about people taking double the dessert.

@ElbieKay: No, no, I totally get wanting to give each child their own choice and not force identical-ness on them! And I mean, if you get to choose for them at this age and want to choose two things you like, go for it!! Agree with the others saying desserts can be frozen/sent home with guests who are close enough to you to feel comfortable taking some with them.

And no, your hubby doesn't get to choose sorbet as the birthday treat for one of your twins!

But in all honesty....@wrkbrk: said what everyone knows the real solution is....over-buy and eat cake for a week!!! :):):)
