DS was born with one undescended testicle. The pediatrician says he has a year for it to descend otherwise we should do surgery to get it. From what I've read, it seems if it doesn't descend on its own by 3 months it probably won't. Has anyone else gone through this with their LO? Did you have the surgery? How was it?

Less than 1% will descend after 6 months. Go see a pediatric urologist and they will do a good exam to determine if the testicle is in the groin or impalpable. Usually they'll schedule surgery at around a year old. No imaging studies are required, so don't let anyone con you into thinking an ultrasound is a good idea. If the testis is palpable, it will be a small incision on the groin and a small incision on the scrotum. Most little guys are back climbing over furniture by day 3.

Not firsthand, but my sister-in-law went through this with her son. It didn't descend on its own & they had the surgery (I recall it being right around a year old). She said they had a rough few days right after, but all in all he was perfectly fine.

My LO had an undescended testicle. It came down around 10 weeks.

@BeachMama: I would see them after 6 months. It's nice to wait until at least 6 months of age for elective surgery, although anesthesia is quite safe for the new babies too.

My nephew went through this, and to be honest the doctors waited too long. When the had the surgery at a year, it was determined that they his testes had shriveled and will never produce the testosterone that he needs. When it's time for him to go through puberty, he'll need hormone shots to do so, and he'll never be able to have kids.
I know that my nephew's situation is very rare, but please consider getting another opinion. A pediatrician recently said that he should have been treated at a month or so old and this may have been avoidable.

Both my boys were born with undescended testicles. I was clueless and had no idea about it. . Before a month old, both had descended. DH was on top of it! He has a nephew that had a testicle that didn't descend and lost it. So he was well aware! Not sure what age he had surgery.

@BeachMama: Oh yeah, definitely wait until 6 months. The pediatrician will (should) check for them at all his well child checks. If they aren't down by 6 months, then to a pediatric urologist.

@MaisyMay: Both testicles? That's honestly not something that would have turned out differently at one day or one year. Especially if they were completely impalpable. Dysplastic testes are created that way, unfortunately.
I'm sorry that your nephew has to deal with that. Waiting until puberty is a different matter. Then the undescended testis would be infertile.

Both my DS testicles have just begun entering his scrotum. He is 14 months old
